Similarly as in the whole theology of J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, the primacy of God constitutes a starting point also in ecclesiology. And it is only through this hermeneutic key that we are able to properly read communio ecclesiology – the most characteristic and original element of Ratzinger’s teaching on the Church. Its deepest source is the communion of God and man, fulfilling itself to the richest extent in the Person of Jesus Christ – God-Man. Communio of the Church means co-participation with Christ; the Church is not ours, it belongs to God. We shall perceive the universality and holiness of the Church or Christian brotherhood from this perspective. The saving universalism of the Church does not depend on alleged openness of the community (flexibility, adaptability, susceptibility to change), yet it results from the God’s plan we all contribute to, not through “improving” church structures, according to our own and casual valuation, but through deepening our faith, conversion, confidence towards God’s presence inside the Church and surrender to Him.
Kształt antropologii zależy od kształtu teologii. Antropologia bezbożna wypacza obraz człowieka; zerwanie relacji z Bogiem sprawia, że wszelkie dziedziny życia i ludzkiej aktywności ulegają deformacji i degradacji. Neognostycka mentalność, będąca mieszaniną antropologicznej frustracji, ślepej wiary w naukę oraz snobizmu elit; modne fascynacje zachodnimi wersjami dalekowschodnich religii wspierającymi w sumie nihilistyczne zapędy ponowoczesności; narcystycznie kreatywna kultura oraz relatywistyczna twórczość sytuowana – w imię tolerancji i pluralizmu – poza dobrem i złem stanowią, zdaniem J. Ratzingera/Benedykta XVI, najgroźniejsze dziś choroby kultury i duchowości.

The shape of anthropology depends on the shape of theology. Godless anthropology distorts the image of a man; a broken relationship with God makes all spheres of life and human activity become distorted and degraded. While rejecting his Creator and the dependence on Him, a man loses his sense of meaning and taste of life. He neurotically tries to find them in other areas, replacing real values with substitutes and true reality with independently created requisites. Ratzinger shows that the loss of God and misplaced human autonomy generate sorrow, emptiness and, consequently, protest; everything in life becomes ill. According to J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, the most dangerous contemporary diseases of culture and spirituality are: neo-gnostic mentality which is a mixture of anthropological frustration, blind faith in science and snobbery of elites; trendy fascinations with the West versions of Far Eastern religions generally supporting nihilistic inclinations of postmodernity; narcissistically creative culture and relativistic output placed beyond good and evil – in the name of tolerance and pluralism. The only cure can be cognition of real God and recognition of a source of hope and love in Him. Only by drawing from Him, a man is able to cocreate the world where the final word does not belong to death.
Cywilizacyjny, ideowy kontekst ponowoczesnego Zachodu każe teologii potwierdzić swoją tożsamość, zadania i miejsce w naukowym i uniwersyteckim świecie. Taka teologia wymaga odwagi, bo kontestuje liberalną i ateistyczną koncepcję autonomicznego rozumu i odpowiadający jej model technokratycznego uniwersytetu.

The biblical history of salvation results in tightening the bond between God and man more and more closely, though there is a sudden change in the quality between the Old and New Testaments that makes the bond so far expressed through the Covenant to fulfil it self in the theandric communion in the Person of Jesus Christ. Christianity arises as a communion and, as such, it fulfils itself in the Church, through the Holy Spirit: it consists in making a gift of oneself and relying on the gift. J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI shows how Christianity not only enters the structures of reality, but – in fact − constitutes its most appropriate − since salutary − structure and a hermeneutic key to understand man. What seems paradoxical, or even nonsensical in Christianity, as a matter of fact, breaks the absurdity of atheistically ideologised structure of the world and thinking.

Ratzinger shows christological specifi city of Christian prayer against the background of the universal phenomenon of prayer based on existential imperative of human transcendental search for sense and longing for the Other. First of all, it consists not so much in the specifi c spiritual practice as a moral duty, as it has an ontological source. Jesus convinces of that on the pages of the Gospel, when He reveals the very essence of intertrinitary relations in His man’s prayer (both in its content and form) to His Father. The essential relationship between love and submission, adoratio and proskynesis, expressed by the filial communion with the Father’s will, also in the time of death, is a salutary ‘yes’ for us of God’s promises and defi nes what human piety actually is. Christian prayer consists in participating in the prayers of Jesus and – as such – it constitutes the foundation and essential experience of the Church.
Odrzucając wiarę, współczesność paradoksalnie zawęża ludzkie możliwości poznawcze. Właściwa równowaga i współpraca rozumu i wiary chroni człowieka zarazem przed bezrozumnością religii, jak i bezbożnością rozumu. Papież wyprowadza antropologię z chrystologii: działanie zgodne z rozumem jest zgodne z Logosem. Łaską jest i wiara, i rozum. Prawdę o sobie człowiek odkrywa w Chrystusie.

In his works, J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI devotes a lot of attention to the issues of faith and reason, their interdependence, inseparability and necessity. He considers these issues crucial for today’s civilisation, mentality and culture, in which reason remains dormant or blind. By rejecting faith, the present day – paradoxically – narrows human reasoning capabilities. Thus, the Pope calls for the ‘broadening of reason’, i.e. its orienting towards cognition of truth, based on ‘thinking about the world as a whole’. This can be done thanks to faith and love, which enable men to transcend their cognitive limitations. Adequate balance and cooperation between reason and faith protect men either from irrationality of faith or profanity of reason. Whereat, the Pope derives anthropology from Christology: acting in conformity with reason means acting in accordance with Logos. Both faith and reason are signs of grace. Men can discover truth about themselves in Christ.

J. Ratzinger / Benedict XVI proposes a theology of the Incarnation built on the Christology of meaning. In essence, he derives it from two biblical texts: the Prologue of the Gospel of John and the Epistle to the Hebrews. The present Pope closely links the event of the Incarnation with the creation and the Trinity dogma. The Word that became flesh had existed since the beginning (the eternal Logos); the Incarnation is a consequence of the intra-Trinitarian relationship. Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God – this is the central Christological truth, whose gospel testimony is to be found in the words of Jesus Himself and in His prayer. Therefore, the event of the Incarnation is at the same time an event of revelation and salvation: Jesus is the real “place” of God’s presence and the real “instrument of propitiation” – hilasterion. The historical singularity and the material limitation of Jesus of Nazareth’s life as well as the consequent sacramental spirituality of the Church are, on the one hand, a manifestation of God’s humility and, on the other, a guarantee of divine presence and the definiteness of salvation. The death and resurrection of the Son of God restores the original (created) meaning to the world and gives it the ultimate meaning, which man regains by participating in the Son’s gesture – His relation to the Father.

J. Ratzinger – Benedict XVI convinces about an essential role Mariology plays for Christian theology, spirituality and existence. In reply to academic tendencies to marginalize Mariology, among others, because of the shape it takes in folk piety, he shows analogy between Maria-Christ-Church relationship and Mariology-Christology-Ecclesiology relationship. Starting from specific biblical, redemptive events, in which Maria participated through Grace and in which she committed herself voluntarily, he proves that Mariology protects the height of faith, Bible integrity, essence of the Church, true good of men, as a man and a woman, over the centuries – since the times of first doctrinal disputes until the most contemporary civilisation and theological dilemmas. Catholic faith and piety owe the balance between rationality and feelings to Maria and Her heart constitutes the very centre of Ratzinger’s Mariology. Hence learning Maria’s feelings – Her pure cordiality – is a Christian way, on which blessing from the Sermon on the Mount and its promise: looking at God, come true.

The question concerning God with regards to suffering, involving His attitude towards human experience of suffering, constitutes a crucial point of theology, while the corresponding answer has been inextricably linked with the image of God Himself and forms the very essence of Christian faith. J. Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI elicits the image of God emerging from biblical stories of suffering: Abraham’s (Moria), Job’s and, finally, Christ’s (cross), their redemptive-historical apogee. Further to the story of sacrifice of Isaac, the Pope converts Abraham’s words: ‘God will provide’ into – so to speak – a pivot, and – at the same time – a punch line of the theological analysis of the problem and indicates multiple connotations of this notion. God does not solve the secret of suffering outside Himself; consequently, men may get an answer only by entrusting God with the whole burden of their existence. Honesty, confidence and humility of prayer enable men to discern and understand that suffering – though remaining drama and raising justified objection – proves to be the place of cognition of God, who finally “changes” men (in their suffering), saves and redeems them.
Christology is the key to understand God’s justice. Jesus – the Son who is one in substance with His Father – shows what God’s justice is and how different it is from men’s rules. God overcomes the logic of repayment, a suitable reward or deserved punishment, not through ignoring or excluding them, but through omnipotent love that makes Him assume the burden of responsibility and pay the price of Salvation. Incarnation of the Son of God, which leads Him inevitably to death and sacrifice of His life, redeeming the sense and intentions of all the previous sacrifices, becomes an expression of God’s justice. It returns a man to God as His possession and restores the image and the likeness of God in us. Paradoxically, justice that does not reveal itself through power and authority, but through love and sacrifice, turns out to be omnipotent, since it is redemptive. As such, through its excess, it establishes the kingdom of God and becomes a criterion of Christian ethos.
