Szczecin is a city with the best potential for water sports in the country and sailing in particular. No other Polish urban agglomeration can even match it in this respect. In the opinion of the authors of this paper, wrong location of the yachting infrastructure is one of the main obstacles preventing the effective usage of boats in this city. The majority of berths for pleasure craft are located on the southern shores of Lake Dąbie. It is obvious that a yachtsman stationed there, having to his disposal just a few hours after work, is not capable to reach any further than the northern part of this lake, including the only marina there – Lubczyna. On the other hand, his colleague from the left-bank Szczecin (Skolwin) can reach, within comparable time limits, not only Lake Dąbie (with Lubczyna) but also Roztoka Odrzańska with a selection of ports in Stepnica (four marinas), Gąsierzyno, Trzebież, and Jasienica. The four-hour advantage of sailors from Skolwin is also important during weekend trips. Another attractive aspect of the Skolwin marina is the shorter distance from a yachtsman residence. In recent years there has been a rapid development of the northern areas of Szczecin and its western perimeter. It is likely that the above-mentioned suburban areas are inhabited by many people who could afford to have a yacht. An average distance to be covered on the way to the marinas in the Dąbie District is 14–20 km and a comparable distance to Skolwin is only 6–10 km. Having in mind the need to promote Skolwin as a site of a future, more functional, yachting centre, the authors of this paper studied the history and other background factors affecting the development of water sports in the northern part of the left-bank Szczecin. They focused on the time period after World War 2, and on the last 60 years in particular, which coincided with the existence of the Sailing Section of the Sports Club “Świt”. Our initiative seems to be important in the current situation when the EU funds are also being used for developing yachting infrastructure, such as the West-Pomeranian Sailing Route.
