Visual theology is a new field of theological reflection, and as such, must apply for a determination of its status, which is its subject and method. This article focuses on the methodological aspects of the problem. The first part of the elaboration is dedicated to contemporary definitions of theology considered in the context of visual theology. Theology, in its basic meaning, is the science of God and the relationship between God, men and the world, as well as a set of science which explains contents of religious belief (including the dogmas). Faith in divine revelation is the main source of theology. The very name „visual theology” evokes a number of questions concerning, for example, the transition from verbal structure to structure of a picture. There is no doubt that theology is, was, and will remain a reality of intellectual reflection. However, it should read the signs of the times, among which the foremost place seems to be occupied by a tendency to dominate the culture of the image. Since the image is the work of men and it tells about its author, it may be a source of theological recognition. Such an image is the one of modernity that visual theology should read and interpret. Enlightenment domination of reason, freedom, understanding of time as history, secularization, an individual and individualization, an institution, relativism, tolerance and sociological changes are all together components of the image of contemporaneity and as such are mentioned in the article.
Teologia narracyjna zapobiega wszelkim dążeniom do oderwania teologii od życia i kultu, potrzeba jej jednak krytycznych zasad umożliwiających ustalenie znaczenia i prawdy. Wśród chrześcijan wschodnich narracyjny wątek w teologii ocalał w liturgii i ikonach. Prekursorami teologii narracyjnej byli dwaj niemieccy teologowie – Johann Baptist Metz i Harald Weinrich. Teologia narracyjna doskonale wyczuwa ducha czasu. Należy na przykład rozważyć problem relacji pomiędzy narracyjną strukturą głębi żydowsko-chrześcijańskiej tradycji a gatunkami opowiadania, jakie znajdujemy w tekstach biblijnych i teologicznych. Ze swoim konceptem otwartego opowiadania teologia narracyjna stawia istotne pytanie pod adresem koncepcji zamkniętego objawienia. Teologię narracyjną można rozumieć jako szansę odnowienia ciągle jeszcze żywego projektu teologii hermeneutycznej, a więc teologii żywo zainteresowanej wyjaśnianiem, przekładaniem, czynieniem bardziej zrozumiałymi tekstów – w znaczeniu formuł i symboli wiary – teologii pojmującej swoją istotę jako sztukę i naukę wyjaśniania i wykładania tekstów.

Narrative Theology is one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary theology. This paper tries to indiacate the meaning of Narrative Theology for theological systematics. ”Narrative theology’ derives its name from a Latin word narrare that means to tell. It is a modern attempt of renewal Christian theology as theology of historical religion, which not only conveys the message in the form of written fixed rules of faith, but also intends to tell about specific events. Liberating from the abstract doctrinal statements, narrative theology finds its spiritual homeland in the biblical and other religious stories. It prevents all attempts to separate theology from the life and the cult. However, it needs critical rules that enable setting the meaning and the truth. Precursors of Narrative Theology were two German theologians – Johann Baptist Metz and Harald Weinrich. Narrative theology draws attention to the fact that the representation of killed Jesus as a living Messiah for the particular human being or the specific human community can not appear on the basis of rational argument or historical documentation, as there is a problem of replacing the bridge between those historical events and the current situation. This can be done not by the forces of the intellect but rather with the use of all human powers, that is his feelings, imagination and fantasy. It will be a holistic approximation to the faith that is in the centre of the fundament. The standard approach to the Church is a treaty and theoretical one. Consequently, we need to develop such a symbolic and theoretical interpretation of the Christian tradition in which there is a place for narrative and correlative approach of the Church. In frames of the reference to the Christian tradition the complex of tradition connected to the definition of the Church takes a special place. A symbolic and telling approach to the Christian tradition opens perspectives that allow to look in a new way – from one’s own life perspective – at what makes Christianity, in order to join realization of being a Christian consciously. Narrative theology feels the spirit of the times perfectly. It rightly recognizes that time of passing the faith in a dry, dogmatic formulas has inevitably finished. Narrative Theology takes a bold attempt to encompass the whole of Christian message from the perspective of existential human experience. The result of this effort is attributed to the new structure of the Christian tradition. This is necessary to be able to speak of a new theology. Narrative Theology is by no means the finished project as it still requires the further clarification and expansion. For example, we need to consider the problem of the relationship between narrative structure, the depth of the Judeo-Christian tradition and types of short stories, which we find in the biblical and theological texts. With its concept of an open storytelling, narrative theology raises an important question at the concept of closed revelation. Narrative theology can be understood as an opportunity to renew a still alive project of hermeneutic theology, which is theology interested in explaining, translating, making texts more understandable – in the sense of formulas and symbols of faith – theology, comprehending its essence as an art and science of explanation and interpretation of texts.
Postmodernity has made a fundamental calculation of the Enlightenment and modern concepts of subjectivity and individuality. The Enlightenment was associated with hope of finding a fixed anchor of interpreting and shaping the world in an autonomous subject. It was to the Enlightenment and modernity not only a center of power capable to take over the world, but actually performing this work on the road to subjugate the natural world through science and its use in the technology. Although the postmodern subject is an individual, it no longer carries the strength of transcendental generality. It seems to be shaped only by speech and communication systems in which they live. Under the conditions of postmodernity, a man is not so much a man in the middle of a homogeneous history, focusing on self-determining identity, but he lives in a situation of patchwork made up of multi-faceted, heterogeneous stories. The social form of life seems to be primarily empty space, which opens up more and more differential community. The space of social existence of a subject is gradually filled by unable to mutual agreement elements of different traditions and the resulting side effects. The place of clear – to this moment – reality , starts to be filled by the incomprehensible shape remains of previous life. The result of these processes is the inability to build in conditions of postmodernity, a coherent identity of one’s own biography as an unbroken unity. Under the conditions of postmodernity, a man lives in a situation of increasing drama of his life story. Individualization of the worlds of life imposes on an individual an increasing obligation of interpretation and integration. It consists of daily necessity for determining, shaping your life, step by step. New grammar, which allows this life to be re-read and "invented" must stand by it.
