Intersectionality, i. e. the interweaving of race, class, gender, etc., above all in discourses of exclusion of others and especially minorities, is frequently seen as an identity-political moment. It is often claimed that the above (and other) categories cannot be separated in or even before the analysis. Here it is suggested that, at least when considering intersectional phenomena in literature, the categories should be conceptualized as separate and only subsequently analyzed for their synthetic interplay.

Intersektionalität, also die Verschränkung von race, class, gender etc. vor allem in Diskursen der Ausschließung von Anderen und besonders Minderheiten, wird häufig als identitätspolitisches Moment betrachtet. Oft wird dabei behauptet, dass die genannten (und weitere) Kategorien sich in oder schon vor der Analyse nicht trennen lassen. Hier wird vorgeschlagen, zumindest bei Betrachtung intersektionaler Phänomene in der Literatur die Kategorien als getrennte zu konzipieren und erst in der Folge deren synthetisches Zusammenspiel zu analysieren.

Artykuł szkicuje proces powstania Xenii Goethego i Schillera i włącza w społeczno-historyczny kontekst powstającego literackiego rynku. Wychodząc z obserwacji Franza Schwarzbauera (SCHWARZBAUER 1993:317) stwierdzających, ze Xenie tworzą „epigramatyczny pochód karnawałowy“, artykuł podejmuje pytanie o wymiar zawartego w nich elementu karnawalizacji. Odpowiedź nawiązuje do głównych założeń estetycznej doktryny klasyków weimarskich.

The essay lays out the production of Goethe’s and Schiller’s Xenien and situates it in the (socio-)historic context of the evolving literary market. Starting with Franz Schwarzbauer’s observation, due to which the Xenien form an „epigrammatischen Karnevalszug [epigrammatical carnival procession]“ (SCHWARZBAUER 1993:317), the analysis once more inquires about the dimension of the carnivalesque. The result of this inquiry is put in relation to the main features of Weimar Classicism’s aesthetic doctrine.

Der Entstehungsprozess von Goethes und Schillers Xenien wird skizziert und in den (sozial-)historischen Kontext des sich formierenden literarischen Marktes eingeordnet. Ausgehend von der Beobachtung Franz Schwarzbauers, dass die Xenien einen „epigrammatischen Karnevalszug“ formieren (SCHWARZBAUER 1993:317), wird noch einmal nach der Dimension des Karnevalesken gefragt. Die Antwort auf diese Frage wird in Relation zu den Grundzügen der ästhetischen Doktrin der Weimarer Klassiker gesetzt.
