RESCUE FOR EUROPE IN ROMAN JAWORSKI’S „WEDDING OF COUNT ORGAZ”. ON THE ILLUSORY CONCEPT OF MODERNITYIn the article, the author presents a map of the main trends associated with the problem of Europe and European identity which are of particular importance for the broadly understood modernism. In this context, the novel by Roman Jaworski „Wesele hrabiego Orgaza” (The Wedding of Count Orgaz), whose main topic is a critical analysis of the then dominant tendencies to heal the prematurely withered Europe, occupies an important place. It is these very issues that constitute the main topic of the article. In Jaworski’s novel, the attempts to rescue Europe were presented in a grotesque light; this is noticeable particularly in the projects of modernity: treated here as illusory intellectual, ordering constructions whose aim was to alter history; (mainly the principle of collection, clean slate – tabula rasa etc.). The element of the catastrophic, so characteristic of this novel which is combined here with the awareness of the extinction of all values, is transformed into an argument over the issue whether these values would have a chance to survive.
Henryk Markiewicz on theory of the novel The article presents Professor Henryk Markiewicz as the outstanding theorist of the novel, the author of many publications devoted to narration, plot, fictional characters and also other issues referring to the role of time and space in the narrative works. The author gives particular attention to the book The theories of the novel abroad. It is a compendium impressive in extend and scale that presents historical review of the western theories of the novel from antiquity to modern times.
In my paper, I deal with the relationships between the present-day discourse in literature and literature itself: mainly in the aspect of the category of "otherness." Among many current understandings of that category, I analyse those for which literature is the sphere of what is distinct. That prospect also allows me to identify the experience of "otherness," being initiated owing to literature, and that only in the manner available to literature. The category of "other-ness" is associated with the same meanings in which it appears in both present-day literature and cultural anthropology, consequently, it is identified with ethnic and gender distinctness, or the area of exclusion, or, just the opposite, the area of inclusion contrary to one's w ill, or alienation etc. In my paper, I concentrate on the methods of literary thematicality of learning about oneself and "the other" (I mainly lim it myself to personal relationships, or novelistic " I" - "the other" relationships), which are present at various levels of present-day prose. I also take into account those literary strategies which serve the destabilization of both social and literary conventions and demonstrate "the otherness in the otherness" of literature. In conclusion, I point out dangerous trends which appear in literary studies: the one which leads either to excessive ideologization of literature or, vice versa, to excessive unification of the varieties of "otherness" presented in literature.
The review of the book by Dorota Korwin-Piotrowska gives praise to the hitherto presented concept of scrutinising various types of silence in the context of poetics, rhetoric and cognitive science. Attention is also paid to the fact that, so far, research on modern prose has lacked any studies in that matter. In the first chapters, the reader is offered an opportunity to learn more about contemporary theories, which – for Korwin-Piotrowska – constitute a source of inspiration and undergo a creative transformation. The next chapters, on the other hand, contain research instruments, which are followed by various interpretations of the literary output of such authors as Miron Białoszewski, Hanna Krall, Zbigniew Kruszyński, Marek Kędzierski and Jacek Dukaj. Not only are these analyses evidence of Korwin-Piotrowska’s excellent skills in terms of literary science, but also they prove her exceptional analytical sensitivity.

W recenzji książki Doroty Korwin-Piotrowskiej doceniono zaprezentowaną tu koncepcję badań kategorii milczenia w perspektywie poetyki, retoryki i kognitywistyki. Przedstawione w dalszych częściach interpretacje twórczości m.in.
