Enterprises may take advantages of internal and external sources while financing their development activity. The results of a survey presented in the paper provide evidence that Polish enterprises finance their development activity mainly internally due to a number of barriers limiting the availability of external funds.
According to M. E. Porter competitive advantage is more and more attributed to innovativeness capability. Unfortunately, results of innovativeness analysis of Polish enterprises confirm their low and even decreasing innovativeness level. This 'status quo' is the result of attitudes and strategic choices made by management, lack of branch institutes and a low degree of cooperation between entrepreneurs and academic environment
