The author proposes a method for predicting structural changes in Polish enterprises based on Markov chain theory. This method makes it possible to analyze the entry and exit of companies in specific business sectors, as well as to examine the migration of firms across sectors. Markov chains enable forecasts of the future composition of the corporate sector as well as computations of the average remaining lifetime and average age of companies in each category based on an appropriate fundamental matrix. This can serve as the basis for further conclusions concerning not only the economy as a whole, but also its individual components. The findings presented in the article testify to the stability of Polish companies in changing economic conditions. The level of migration across sectors is low and limited to several sectors and the expected company lifetime is relatively short. On average, the lifetime of Polish companies is less than half that of Belgian companies surveyed by the National Bank of Belgium, for example. Generally, Nehrebecka says, transport companies have the shortest lifetimes in Poland, followed by companies active in sectors such as construction, “other services” and trade. On the other hand, companies operating in agriculture, the hunting-and-forestry sector and industry tend to stay the longest on the market. The average maturity of a sector, measured with the so-called “closeness to extinction” index for all the companies, is 46%. Non-specialized exporters show the highest average age in the analyzed sectors. State-owned companies have significantly higher average age and remaining lifetime than private companies. The larger the company, the higher is its average age and average remaining lifetime. According to Nehrebecka, studies of the demographic evolution of businesses may be an additional point of reference for the evaluation of monetary policy transmission mechanisms and for shaping the institutional and legal environments in which businesses operate.
The aim of the article is to compare models on a train and validation sample, which will be created using logistic regression and Support Vector Machine (SVM) and will be used to assess the credit risk of non-financial enterprises. When creating models, the variables will be subjected to the transformation of the Weight of Evidence (WoE), the number of potential predictions will be reduced based on the Information Value (IV) statistics. The quality of the models will be assessed according to the most popular criteria such as GINI statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) and Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC). Based on the results, it was found that there are significant differences between the logistic regression model of discriminatory character and the SVM for the model sample. In the case of a validation sample, logistic regression has the best prognostic capability. These analyses can be used to reduce the risk of negative effects on the financial sector.
The purposes of this article are to present validation techniques according to their discriminatory power, while indicating the reservations about such techniques, and to check the adjustment of the existing Polish bankruptcy prediction models in the context of their discriminatory power. This is the first study that performs a validation of such models. Based on the analysis, it was found that the fifth model developed by Hadasik was characterised by a very high discriminatory power. The decision was made to base the evaluation of the discriminatory power of the modules on the Gini index, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic, the H measure, the information value (IV), and the precision of the estimates of bankruptcy.
The epsilon method has been applied to examine the strength of relations among selected objective and subjective factors connected with a manager’s predictions of their companies’ development. The aim of this research was to study which variable has the strongest impact on business expectations in construction. The results offer compelling evidence that respondents rely both on their current opinion on enterprise as well as on general economic situation. The survey was carried out based on Polish data from 2000:1 to 2008:10.
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the sensitivity of a particular characteristic affecting house prices across its distribution. This is a new approach compared to previous studies concerning the Polish market, which analyzed the impact of these factors on the average price level. In addition, the presented study allows for an assessment of differences in price dynamics in the designated price segments using hedonic indexes. Quantile regression is used Tests were performed for transactions conducted in the secondary housing market in Warsaw. Two different parameters are measured for apartments - a decoration standard and location. Differences in those parameters are especially noticeable between extreme groups of housing price, which may indicate differences in preferences of customers with different fiscal constraints. Using quantile regressions to determine hedonic price indices shows that in the majority of observed periods there was not clear difference in price dynamics in each segment.

The article looks at how the financial condition of companies influences their investment policies. To estimate the significance of individual financial indicators, the authors used data from the balance sheets and profit and loss accounts of more than 58,000 non-financial Polish firms from the 1995-2010 period. The Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) was used for the estimations. The model described in the article involves estimates of individual, sectoral and time effects. It indirectly takes into account the cost of capital in the investment equation. The cost of capital is a variable that is extremely difficult to observe at the level of individual companies, the authors say. The analysis was conducted for different groups of companies arranged by size. On the basis of the estimated econometric models, the authors validated a hypothesis about a significant influence of financial ratios on companies’ investment rates. An improvement in the cash flow has the greatest contribution to the investment rate, the authors say, and this effect is strongest in the case of small companies. While analyzing the impact of the cash flow on the investment rate, the authors confirmed the strong non-linearity of the trend for all groups of enterprises. In addition, they found that the financial pressure felt by companies in the form of debt and costs of interest reduces the level of investment. In the context of the monetary policy transmission mechanism, this may point to the existence of interest rate and balance sheet channels, the authors say. Another conclusion from the research is that financial pressure increases the probability of the financial accelerator mechanism – or a situation in which adverse shocks to the economy may be amplified by worsening financial market conditions. In the estimated model, small businesses turned out to be far more sensitive in their investment policies to an economic downturn than the corporate sector as a whole. The financial condition of enterprises reflected by selected indicators clearly influences the investment decisions of individual companies, and sensitivity to these indicators in terms of investment additionally depends on company size. This is important for assessing the mechanism whereby monetary policy is transmitted to the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector, the authors say.

The article aims to identify the determinants of short- and long-term corporate financial investment in Poland, with a particular emphasis on the saving and interest rates. We conducted the analysis based on unbalanced panel data for companies with at least 10 employees from the Polish Central Statistical Office’s GUS F-02 annual reports for 1995–2012. We used the system GMM estimator (Generalized Method of Moments; Arellano, Bover 1995; Blundell, Bond 1998) to estimate the parameters, and we applied a robust variance-covariance matrix. The research findings show a significant negative correlation between financial investments and cash flow, which means that liquidity problems in the core business induce companies to increase long-term financial investments (securities) as a precautionary motive. By contrast, the accumulation of surplus cash from operating activities in the form of savings increases long-term financial investments. The research also points to a positive impact of the real interbank overnight interest rate. This means that higher interest rates increase the opportunity cost of investments in fixed capital and may encourage companies to spend their savings on buying financial assets (interest rate channel of monetary policy) instead of investing in fixed capital or research and development (R&D).

Do oszacowania parametrów wykorzystano systemowy estymator GMM (Generalised Methods of Moments; por. Potwierdza to występowanie motywu przezornościowego. Łącznie uzyskane wyniki pozwalają wnioskować, iż wzrost stóp procentowych oznacza rosnący koszt alternatywny inwestycji w środki trwałe i może zachęcać firmy do przeznaczenia oszczędności na zakup aktywów finansowych (kanał stopy procentowej polityki pieniężnej) zamiast na inwestycje w środki trwałe lub prace rozwojowe (B+R).
The article aims to verify the impact of macroeconomic uncertainty and idiosyncratic shocks on corporate savings and the cash holdings of companies in Poland. The analysis is based on an unbalanced panel data for companies with at least 10 workers for the 1995–2012 period, as provided by Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) in its GUS F-02 reports. To verify the impact of macroeconomic uncertainty on savings, models were estimated using the GMM estimator with HAC, and the influence of idiosyncratic shocks on corporate savings was identified with use of a robust system GMM estimator. The study shows that Polish companies tend to adapt their savings and cash resources to the level of macroeconomic uncertainty. The findings also indicate that companies maintain a security buffer in the form of accumulated savings as a precaution for fear of idiosyncratic shocks.

Polskie przedsiębiorstwa dostosowują posiadane oszczędności i zasoby środków pieniężnych do poziomu niepewności makroekonomicznej. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują też na motyw przezornościowy utrzymywania bufora bezpieczeństwa w postaci zgromadzonych oszczędności z obawy przed szokami idiosynkratycznymi.
The paper analyzes the importance of trade credit in the financing of enterprises in Poland and identifies factors determining the use of trade credit by Polish companies. Companies receive trade credit from their suppliers, while also extending credit to their own customers, the authors say. They analyze trade credit in net terms, looking at the difference between trade credit obtained and extended by companies. Trade credit received was measured as trade liabilities not including current expenses. Net trade credit is determined by factors including the size of the company, the industry it represents, the proportion of exports in total sales, and the proportion of foreign ownership in share capital. The analysis is based on panel data collected by Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), specifically its F-02 annual reports for the 1995–2011 period. The Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) was used to estimate the coefficients of the model. The research shows that low sales profitability, a long Days Payable Outstanding period, low debt capacity, and a long cash conversion cycle are good predictors of the use of trade credit, the authors say. Their paper validates the hypothesis that greater growth opportunities and a greater ability to generate cash surpluses lead to an increase in trade credit extended. The authors also conclude that trade credit increases with an increase in the size of companies and that large companies tend to offer more trade credit. This is accompanied by a decreased propensity to incur credit and a smaller volume of net trade credit received, the authors say.

Przedsiębiorstwa zarówno zaciągają kredyt handlowy u dostawców, jak i udzielają go odbiorcom. Do oszacowania parametrów wykorzystano odporny systemowy estymator GMM. Wykazano, iż niska rentowność sprzedaży, długi cykl zobowiązań, niska zdolność kredytowa i długi cykl środków pieniężnych są dobrymi predykatorami korzystania z kredytu handlowego. Zweryfikowano też hipotezy, że wyższe możliwości wzrostu i wyższa zdolność do generowania pieniężnej nadwyżki finansowej zwiększają wielkość udzielanego kredytu handlowego. Wraz ze wzrostem wielkości przedsiębiorstwa rośnie skłonność do udzielania kredytu handlowego i wolumen udzielanego kredytu handlowego, a maleje skłonność do zaciągania kredytu handlowego netto i wielkość zaciąganego kredytu handlowego netto.
The aim of this article is to discuss basic theories concerning corporate cash holdings as well as to identify and explain the main differences between them. The authors also set out to identify the key determinants of corporate cash holdings in order to indicate which of the presented theories better explains its volatility in the case of listed companies in Poland. The analysis was conducted on the basis of unbalanced panel data containing information on the financial statements of companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange between 1999 and 2015 as well as information on the macroeconomic environment. To estimate the parameters, a system GMM estimator with a robust variance-covariance matrix was used. It was shown that the level of corporate cash holdings is positively associated with the leverage ratio, cash flow, firm size and the value of working capital. In addition, a significant negative relation was found between corporate cash holdings and dividend payouts. Moreover, it has been shown that the characteristics of the macroeconomic environment have a significant association with the size of corporate liquid assets, which was further confirmed by stress tests analysis. Finally, based on the results, we can point to the advantage of the postulates of pecking order theory over the postulates of trade-off theory, with reference to cash held by the analysed group of entities.

The paper seeks to establish why companies use all kinds of leasing programs to finance their operations. The authors analyze determinants such as debt level, profitability, liquidity, company size, and tax incentives. They conduct a quantitative literature review (meta-analysis) using vote-counting procedures in order to systematize findings on why companies decide to finance their operations through leasing. The authors have reviewed more than 130 studies on how businesses finance their operations. Of this, 27 studies focused on leasing programs. The authors analyzed a total of 254 econometric models focusing on the determinants of financing business operations with leasing programs. While conducting their meta-analysis, Białek-Jaworska, Dzik-Walczak and Nehrebecka estimated special logit models to identify specific factors determining the significance of the predictors used. The authors found that “study characteristics such as the year of publication, the studied period and the sample size significantly influence the relationship between a company’s debt and financing through leasing.” The authors also conclude that “the variable determining the relevance of the results for the relationship between profitability and the use of leasing is the number of observations in the sample, as well as the year of publication, number of observations in the sample, and the length of the sample in the period relevant to the construction of the model.”

Celem artykułu jest znalezienie przyczyn zróżnicowania istotności zadłużenia, rentowności, płynności, wielkości przedsiębiorstwa i obciążeń podatkowych w badaniach determinant finansowania przedsiębiorstw leasingiem.
