The paper deals with the relation between a valuable historical object — the ruins of the tenth-century sacral-palatial complex on Lednica Island — and the surrounding contemporary landscape. The difficulties generated by an appropriate display of the object are discussed extensively. Emphasis is placed on the control of building undertakings in order to achieve an architectural and aesthetic balance with the environment; this is the major task of the conservation services and local authorities.
