Przeprowadzona przez autorkę artykułu analiza danych językowych – wykorzystująca „lubelską” koncepcję profilowania pojęć – pozwala zrekonstruować różne profile obrazu Rosjanina, obecne w polskim dyskursie publicznym i w myśleniu potocznym. To profil „brata-wroga”, Słowianina-Azjaty, spotykany w Polsce najszerzej. To profil Rosjanina „władcy”, reprezentującego wrogie imperium i uczestniczącego w despotycznych i totalitarnych sposobach sprawowania władzy.

Contrary to popular belief, the stereotype of a Russian in Poland is not exclusively negative. The analysis presented in this article — also partially used in the article by Bartmiński, Lappo and Majer-Baranowska in the present volume — follows the Lublin conception of profiling and allows one to reconstruct various profiles of the image of a Russian present in Polish public discourse and ordinary thinking. The profiles arise out of base features established in the Polish tradition relative to the assumed perspectives and points of view. The most frequent profile of a Russian is built on the basis of an image of someone with the „Russian soul”, characterized by the lack of restraint, excessive drinking, a pinch of unpredictable recklessness, openness, cordiality, hospitality, love of partying, perserverence, stubbornness, as well as the syndrome of „Asianness”: the mentality of a slave, wildness, civilizational backwardness and hypocrisy. It. is the model of a „brother- enemy”, a Slav-Asian, the most frequent one. The most negative variant is built from the perspective of a Polish citizen and patriot subjected to national, ideological and political repression. This is the profile of a Russian „master”, representing a hostile Empire and participating in despotic and totalitarian mechanisms of wielding power. Among the Polish intelligentsia, there exists the profile of a „Moscovite-friend” (following Mickiewicz). In this view the Russian good (e.g. culture) is kept distinct from the Russian evil (i.e. the political system), a Russian — especially a member of the Russian intelligentsia — being seen as someone close and spiritually rich. The weakest one is a newly arising profile of a Russian-European, found among young educated Poles, who share the common canon of basic values (the knowledge of English, computer skills, the love of McDonald’s, globalization, etc.)

Making use of the conception of cognitive definition, the author reconstructs the Belorussian linguistic stereotype of a Pole. An analysis of linguistic data (systemic, textual and questionnaire-based) allows one to establish the set of base features of the stereotype and reconstruct various profiles of the image of a Pole present in the Belorussian public discourse and everyday thinking. Of historical nature is seeing of a Pole as someone from the same ethnic stock; here also belongs the image of a Pole as 'Mazur' (viewed as 'one of us but different') as well as that of a 'political Pole', 'our Pole' - in accordance with the 16th-century formula 'gente Ruthenus, nationae Polonus'. The contemporary profiles of the image of a Pole include: a Pole as a master; the profile has negative connotations, is socially determined and serves to ridicule (especially in folklore); a Pole as an imperialist; an ideological profile, viewed from the perspective of a Belorussian patriot (Poles are blamed for the difficulties of Belorussians with establishing their own identity, caused by the Polonization of Belorussian gentry); a Pole as a Slav; constructed from the perspective of the ideology of proletariat, within the domain of the language of Soviet propaganda; the least conspicuous profile, constructed from the point of view of a Belorussian intelligent, is that of a Pole as an ally, an object of jealousy because of his national consciousness and as someone from whom one can expect support in the process of the awakening of the russified Belorussian society.
The article offers an interpretation of the significance of Juliusz Osterwa’s stay in Samara (July 1915 to February 1916) for his artistic development. This interpretation is based on a reading of personal papers: the Samara Notebook, a letter to Kornel Makuszyński, dated 1915, and Osterwa’s memoirs from the 1930s. The picture of the artist’s time in Samara emerging from these sources is complemented by the findings of Russian historians, reconstructing the fate of Polish refugees during the First World War. The juxtaposition of the image of Samara found in historical works with the image sketched in Osterwa’s notes reveals a mechanism of concealing painful experiences with mental constructs in the artist’s auto-narratives. The article puts forth the hypothesis that Osterwa’s stay in Samara engendered a serious existential crisis, which was overcome in December 1915 thanks to a nativity play produced together with Wincenty Drabik. The Samara sadness allowed Osterwa to distance himself from his star status. The clash with foreignness sharpened his cultural awareness and gave him a new perspective. The Christmas performance enhanced his understanding of the social function of the theatre as a place of overcoming an identity crisis. (Transl. Z. Ziemann)
The article aims to reconstruct the Polish stereotype of a Russian by means of the cognitive definition, whose principal components are predications of the type „Russians drink”, „Russians are brutal”, „Russians are aggressive”, „Russians are musical”, etc. It also aims to capture the mechanisms guiding the functioning of the stereotype in public discourse. A set of about seventy fixed sentences-judgements of this type can be grouped into a few categories (syndromes): „the Russian soul”, „a brother Slav”, an aggressor and enemy, „a master and slave” (i.e. someone despotic and enslaved at the same time), „an Asian”, someone with a specific and rich cultural background, a marketplace trader. At the level of contemporary public discourse the categories give rise to profiles, i.e. functional stereotypical variants whose creator is always a sociologically and culturally defined subject, e.g. a Pole — simple person, a Polish patriot, a member of the Polish intelligentsia with European horizons, a young pragmatist. The base set of features attributed to Russians by Poles is established on the basis of three types of linguistic data: systemic (ethnonyms and their derivatives, phraseological units and collocations), experimental (questionnaires conducted according to various methods among Lublin students in the period 1990-2000) and textual.

Autorzy rekonstruują polski stereotyp językowy Rosjanina, stosując metodę definicji kognitywnej, której podstawową jednostką są predykacje typu: „Rosjanie piją”, „są brutalni”, „agresywni”, „muzykalni” itp., a w kolejności zmierzają do uchwycenia mechanizmów rządzących funkcjonowaniem stereotypu w dyskursie publicznym. Zespół takich utartych zdań-sądów liczących około 70 jednostek układa się w kilka wiązek (syndromów) – „rosyjskiej duszy”, „brata Słowianina”, agresora i wroga, „władcy-niewolnika”, tj. człowieka zarazem despotycznego i zniewolonego, „Azjaty”, nosiciela specyficznej i bogatej kultury, handlarza bazarowego.
