This article is an attempt to analyze culture’s impact on human verbal communication. The first part combines the differences between Polish and English with the cultural dimensions described by Geert Hofstede and with Hall’s contextuality. Then, actual examples of verbal manifestations of cultural differences are given based on popular Polish, British and American TV programmes. These are talk shows: Rozmowy w toku and The Oprah Winfrey Show, dancing shows: Taniec z gwiazdami and Strictly Come Dancing, and medical dramas: Na dobre i na złe and Emergency Room. The source material on which this paper is based consists of recordings of the shows (recorded while broadcast and a Warner Bros DVD), a video sharing website YouTube and literature concerning cultural differences and their impact on language.

This paper presents a very important problem in the theory of IRT, namely the Item Information Function. It presents the similarities and differences in the approach to this problem for the one-parameter Rasch model and the two-parameter Birnbaum model. All kinds of relationships are presented in graphs. Additionally, special attention is paid to the interpretation of these graphs and the results.

This article presents a very important problem from the point of view of social research. The author focuses on the analysis of polytomous questions. He presents part of the theory of IRT models: Item Information Function, Item Category Information, Category Response Functions and (for Polytomous Item Response Theory) different approaches to this problem. The paper shows any kind of relationships on the graphs and pays special attention to the interpretation of these graphs and the results.

This article presents how to use two-parametric logistic model to make a stressors analysis. This model can be used to determine the strength of influence of stressors on individual respondents. There is also a proposition how to use forecasting to assist the process of stress management. Stress management should be based on preventing the appearance of stressors. With the proposed methods, it is possible to compare the strength of stressors in each period, to look how the planned change will be received by employees in the future. In addition, using the cluster analysis allows to find the best way of stressors grouping.

This article presents how to use two-parametric logistic model to make a stressors analysis. In addition, there is presented how to use some statistical tests to solve a problem with correctly grouping stressors. As it turns out, statistical tests are very helpful to deepen a stressors analysis. Thanks to Mann-Whitney U Test or Chi-Squared Test, we can find the answer to the questions: is the group affiliation or type of employment contract an important factor in stressors analysis?

The objective of this paper is to verify if Google Books Ngram Viewer, a new tool working on a database of 361 billion words in English, and enabling quick recovery of data on word frequency in a diachronic perspective, is indeed valuable to socio-cultural research as suggested by its creators (Michel et al. 2010), i.e. the Cultural Observatory, Harvard University, Encyclopaedia Britannica, the American Heritage Dictionary, and Google. In the paper we introduce a study performed by Greenfield (2013), who applies the program to her Ecological Analysis, and contrast the findings with a study based on similar premises, in which we follow the trends in changes in word frequency throughout the 19th and 20th centuries to observe if these changes correspond to one of the major socio-cultural transformations that took place in the studied period, i.e. mediatization. The results of this study open a discussion on the usefulness of the program in socio-cultural research.

Przystosowanie człowieka do środowiska pracy wpływa na szereg zjawisk psychospołecznych, organizacyjnych i ekonomicznych. Trwają badania nad aplikacyjnością tej koncepcji oraz doskonaleniem metod badawczych. W niniejszym opracowaniu dokonano analizy cech warunkujących przystosowanie do środowiska pracy poprzez wykorzystanie metody, pozwalającej na konsolidację danych pochodzących z kilku kwestionariuszy. Dzięki zastosowaniu specjalnie zbudowanego wskaźnika cech ukrytych przy wykorzystaniu modelu GRM (Graded Response Model) porównano wyniki 419 badanych z ustalonym wzorcem optymalnego przystosowania do pracy. Stworzono ranking pracowników. Wskazano również możliwości aplikacyjne badania poprzez opis sposobu wdrożenia wyników w procesie tworzenia strategii ZZL w organizacji.

Work adjustment (WA) is a variable that influences a great variety of psychological, social, organizational, and economic parameters. Research on the applicability of this concept as well as the improvement of the methodology is ongoing. This paper undertakes analyses of qualities prerequisite to work adjustment using a method allowing the consolidation of data derived from several questionnaires. Thanks to the application of a specially formulated latent trait index, based on the Graded Response Model (GRM), a comparison of results from 419 respondents with the optimal WA pattern was made. An employee ranking was established. Also indicated was the potential for implementing these results in developing a HRM strategy in an organization.

The paper presents a sample of analysis of EU project with regard to ICT application in foreign language teaching and language technology. The analysis is based upon the authors’ observation that by exploring a number of at least 75 projects in terms of their participants, framework programs and scope, some general tendencies can be revealed. The tendencies concern EU research and member state engagement in the aforementioned fields. Having analyzed the data the authors define the nature of the studied projects (educational vs. scientific), point to the most active and beneficial member states and draw models of public and private units cooperation in European research consortiums. Additionally, the analysis presents the first step for further study with regard to particular ICT-tool usage in foreign language learning/teaching in a particular EU country.

This work is theoretical in nature. The main subjects the concept of knowledge and the knowledge management are the main subjects defined in the article. The work also points out the modern approach to knowledge management, in particular it pays attention to the elements of management, the support tools and benefits for company.

Publikacja ma charakter teoretyczny. W artykule zdefiniowano pojęcia wiedzy i zarządzania wiedzą. Omówiono znaczenie wiedzy w przedsiębiorstwie oraz jej źródła. Wskazano na współczesne podejścia do zarządzania wiedzą. W szczególności zwrócono uwagę na narzędzia ją wspomagające oraz korzyści wynikające z ich stosowania dla przedsiębiorstwa.
