One of the manifestations of multi-denominational coexistence in the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Margraviate of Moravia between the Hussite Revolution and the year 1620 was the competition of individual confessions (apart from the Unity of Brethren) for the existing network of parishes as the fundamental unit of church administration. The study seeks an answer to the question of how the landed gentry tried to guarantee that the parishes on their estates, over which they held the right of patronage, would belong to their faith in the future, as was currently the case. It is mainly concentrated on localities owned by the nobility, who were the owners of the right of presentation (a patron’s right to propose a suitable person for a benefice to the ecclesiastical superiors) to approximately three-quarters of all parish churches.

Humanitní vědy a vzdělanci v 19. a 20. století

The paper monitors the transformations of the position of the humanities and scholars in the 19th and 20th centuries. It shows the more or less unexpected acquisition of influence and power in society by a group of educated people in the service of the state or country. They were legitimized by their competence in the humanities – especially those linked to the ancient cultural heritage and secured by university certificates. The prestige capital of this professional group or perhaps even social class was great. They stood out for the 19th century, a time when only a small part of the population possessed full active literacy, the ability to formulate and communicate the problems of society and the time. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, their influence in society began to weaken, two world wars and the modernization and technology of the second half of the century significantly reduced their social role. However, the critical competence of historians and other humanities scholars is socially indispensable even today.

The paper discusses the beginnings of Czech historical bibliography and the publication of printed bibliographic lists by Čeněk Zíbrt and Josef Pekař. Each of them had their own ideas about the concept, publication, and content, which resulted in their personal conflict. Attention is also paid to the history of Polish and German historical bibliography and a comparison of the three.

The study places its focus on the Hussite invective from 1416 against the Kutná Hora preacher Hermann, which has so far been reflected only on the basis of an incomplete edition from the 19th century. After presenting the whole agitation letter, the author examines the credibility of Master Hermann’s preaching work in Kutná Hora and searches for his identity. He focuses on the personality of the Prague doctor of theology and the auxiliary bishop Hermann of Mindelheim and comes to the conclusion that the Kutná Hora preacher Hermann was most likely this Bavarian native. The study thus sheds new light on the transformation of Kutná Hora into an early anti-Hussite centre.

The study focuses on the Prague exile of the last crowned French king Charles X in 1832–1836. It notices the popularization reflection of the king’s stay, which originated in the Czech milieu from the end of the 19th century. It arises from the memoirs of Charles’s contemporaries (including members of his exile court and Josef Rudolph of Wartburg, son of the inspector of Prague Castle, etc.), from reports of the Prague Police Directorate, a collection of reports submitted to Chancellor Metternich, from materials on the accommodation and furnishings options of Prague Castle and from the related results of art-historical research of the New Palace of the castle, where the king stayed with his family and a small court. It deals with the king’s interaction with the milieu of the Czech lands. Last but not least, it then deals with the upbringing of Charles’s grandson Henry, in which František Palacký and Joachime Barrande, among others, participated.

The treatise recapitulates the origin and twenty-five-year history of the publication of the Historical Atlas of the Towns of the Czech Republic, appreciates the work of its editorial board and scientific editorial staff. It evaluates the thirty volumes published in the context of a pan-European project of the historical atlases of towns coordinated since 1968 by the International Commission for the History of Towns. It considers the conception and perspective of the Historical Atlas of the Cities of the Czech Republic in the next stage of its publication.

The study uses the methodological approaches of the so-called new material culture and, through their prism, looks at several issues related to the religious practice of reception sub utraque specie in the 15th and 16th centuries. The first of the problems hitherto little reflected on is related to the practice of serving a large number of believers, the second to innovating the shape of the chalice and using special large goblets with a tube/pipe, which facilitated pouring the transformed wine into smaller goblets and serving the believers. The third area of the authors’ interest is the question of the use of private chalices for reception by more affluent social strata, which would show the limits of the original radical inclusiveness of reception sub utraque specie. The analysis of church accounts recording the consumption of wine in the Utraquist liturgy supports a thesis about a significant decline in enthusiasm associated with the early reform period and frequent reception by the laity, which was significantly influenced by Lutheranism. Furthermore, the authors provide and discuss evidence of the practice of donating and using private chalices by laity.

The submitted study traces the beginnings of the historiographical treatment of the issue of the so-called Czechoslovak Revolution from 1914–1918 using the example of the contradictory destinies of two Czech historians – Jaroslav Goll and Jaroslav Werstadt. The main attention is focused on the period shortly after the establishment of Czechoslovakia, in which in the atmosphere of the efforts for a so-called “de-Austrianisation“ (Entösterreichern) a confrontation of the different ideas about the role of historical science in relation to society occurred. Attention is paid not only to both above-mentioned men but also to questions related to the problem of intergenerational relations of the members of the Czech historical community and the circumstances of the Archive of National Liberation (or the Liberation Monument) as an institution entrusted with research of contemporary history with a special focus on the period of the First World War.

The polemically tuned discussion text reflects on the unfortunate situation of research on the social and economic history of the Middle Ages in contemporary Czech medievalism. It indicates the absence of an institutional background for research on socio-historical issues of the Middle Ages, provides a critical overview of the development of research in social and economic history of the Middle Ages from the 1930s to the present, points to the specificity of socio-historical approaches and considers the pitfalls of sociohistorical research and the reasons for the lack of interest of the younger generation of adepts of historical science in the social and economic history of the Middle Ages.

The study deals with the genesis of evaluation processes of the results of science and research in history in the Czech Republic. It summarises the fundamental problems related to the relationship between the evaluation of the results of basic and applied research and the funding of individual workplaces. The attention is focused on the current state of the art, i.e., the progress and results of evaluation according to Methodology 17+ for the past five-year period (2016–2020), defines the main weaknesses of this system and explains why bibliometric tools are unusable for history (and other humanities) in practice and why they are not considered at all in the national assessment of science and research in these fields. It introduces discussion topics related to the currently ongoing adjustment of the entire evaluation system so that it takes more into account the discipline specifics of individual scientific areas.

Lán ve středověké proměně

The laneus or mansus, in German hube or hufe, also joined the set of building elements of the medieval transformation. The inspiration of the Flemish or Frankish hide was also part of the equipment of the colonisation processes, standing at the beginnings of the changes in the composition of the nationalities and in the demographic profile of Central and East Central Europe. They were inextricably accompanied by a wave of economic, technical, and legal organisational innovations. Even in Bohemia and Moravia, knowledge of hide practices were gradually adopted. It peaked in the late 13th and stretched into the 14th century. At the same time, the hide was soon adapted to domestic needs. At a time when greater emphasis was placed on comparability and transferability, as a relatively unified measuring tool, it became a tool to evenly burden the land and squeeze it under rental interest. The hide was usually connected with the transfer of villages and entire estates to Teutonic or emphyteutic law, in other words purkrecht, abbreviated to emphyteusis. Although hide did not become a universal measure in the end and instead branched out into land and regional offshoots, they too maintained a genetic link to the initial term laneus.

The presented study aims to present the latest trends in contemporary archival historiography. The emphasis is placed on presenting the change in how archival history is perceived that has taken place over the last two to three decades. At the same time, the study introduces the most frequent topics that contemporary European archival historiography deals with. It is possible to mention here both an interest defined institutionally and chronologically (the development of the archive or archives in a certain period), as well as one that is governed by subject criteria (relocated archives, destroyed archives, archives in the service of totalitarian regimes). All these tendencies lead to a significantly broader contextualisation of the insight into the history of archival science. The conclusion of the study is a brief presentation of the current state of Czech research and its (un)openness to the foreign trends presented above.

The study deals with the birth of court research in Czech historical science and on that basis draws attention to the key trends, which are favoured by the traditional linear interpretation of Czech history. It points out the discourses and paradigms through the lens of methodological concepts and narratives, which had a direct impact on the development or background of various research topics.

This study deals with skilled employees of Prague book printers at the turn of the 20th century. Typographers have traditionally had a reputation as elite and elitist workers. In addition, they were active participants in public patriotic life in Prague in the 1860s-1880s. After 1890, however, their main provincial organisation, the Typographic Club, became involved in building a united workers’ movement under the auspices of socialism. The study examines the activities of several typographers-socialists within the structures of social democracy and the reaction of skilled typographers, i.e., the members of the Typographic Club, to the change of rhetoric and strategies of their organisation. It also focuses on how the Typographic Club mastered some cultural practices of the socialist movement (e.g., May Day celebrations, engagement in a unified socialist educational institution or the change in the relationship with unskilled workers). Using the example of the engagement of the Typographic Club in the Dělnická knihtiskárna a nakladatelství [Workers’ Printing Office and Publishing House], it shows the conflicting areas in which the typographic organisation began to split ideologically at the end of the century.

The study analyses some aspects of the dynamic development of the end of the First World War, which led to the declaration of an independent Czechoslovakia. In particular, it concentrates on the planting of the republican character of this state as not a matter-of-course, only a gradually adopted part of the political plan and the programme of foreign resistance, headed by the later president T. G. Masaryk. In connection with the controversy over the character of the future state during the world war the text also contemplates the earlier considerations of the Czech political thought of the 19th century on the issue of the republic and the republican form of government.

The study intends to build on the one hand on the methodology of historical science and on the other hand archival science, namely in the specific area of the so-called archival appraisal of records, or historical sources. After we focus in the first step on the recently deceased Canadian archival thinker and theoretician Terry Cook (1947–2014) and the theory he elaborated of the appraisal/selection of records called the macroappraisal theory, the author will in the second part systematize several levels on which the future potential importance of the historical sources will be constituted and from which it is also possible to interpret. The study concludes with the author’s proposed conception of the so-called “archival hermeneutic circle” as one of the outcomes of reflections on the relationship between historical and archival science.

This paper deals with the approach of state power to public assemblies in interwar Czechoslovakia. It broaches the question of what the state-political authorities considered to be the limit of public order, which could not be crossed at political manifestations. Second, the paper focuses on the question of who determined the approach to public assemblies in the structure of the political administration. The issue is monitored within the manifestation culture of May Day. This holiday offers a defined field in which it is possible to study the ways in which the interwar state and its apparatus of political administration sought in practice the relationship between the guarantee of civil liberties (assembly or freedom of speech) and the protection of state authority.

The testimonies of several eyewitnesses of the conflict over the prestigious role of the baldachin bearer during the liturgical procession of the Feast of the Corpus Christi, which took place between two Italian nobles in 1605 in Prague, allow a detailed analysis of its course. Its interpretation is placed in the context of the importance of public space, which at the beginning of the 17th century in the multi-confessional milieu of the city with the imperial seat became a place of a struggle for influence between the Catholic minority and the non-Catholic majority.
