This paper discusses the situation on the Polish green public procurements (GPP) market, with special emphasis on the results of a GPPinfoNET project realised in the Łódź region. The identification of the main barriers hindering the application of GPP in the Polish practice is the departure point to formulating recommendations concerning organisational and legal changes which would make it possible to increase the share of GPP in the Polish economic practice. Implementation of green public procurement is considered as an important element of sustainable development.

The article concerns the practical use of green public procurement to implement sustainable development. The use of this type of instrument in the investment activity of the city in the years 2007–2017 is presented on the example of the City of Łódź. Documents related to the implementation of public procurement were analyzed. The research was subordinated to the verification of the hypothesis that the implementation of urban investments using green public procurement and ecological criteria is an effective mechanism for the implementation of sustainable development by the territorial self-government. The results confirmed that green public procurement contributes to the improvement of the natural environment and the quality of life of residents in accordance with the concept of sustainable development.

Artykuł dotyczy wykorzystania w praktyce narzędzia realizacji zrównoważonego rozwoju, jakim są zielone zamówienia publiczne. Na przykładzie Miasta Łodzi zostało zaprezentowane zastosowanie zielonych zamówień publicznych w działalności inwestycyjnej miasta w latach 2010–2017. Analizie poddano dokumenty związane z realizacją zamówień publicznych. Przeprowadzone badania zostały podporządkowane weryfikacji hipotezy mówiącej, że realizacja inwestycji miejskich z wykorzystaniem kryteriów ekologicznych jest skutecznym mechanizmem wdrażania zrównoważonego rozwoju przez samorząd terytorialny. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdziły, że zielone przetargi przyczyniają się do osiągania poprawy stanu środowiska przyrodniczego i jakości życia mieszkańców zgodnie z koncepcją zrównoważonego rozwoju.
