Vasiliy Vasilevich Zenkovskiy (1881-1962) is one of the most prominent Russian educators of the 20th century and his pedagogical concept is undoubtedly one of the most original achievements of Russian pedagogical thought of the early 20th century. His research work in the field of pedagogy, however, is not known to the wider group of specialists. The reason for this is that Zenkovskiy is better known in general as a psychologist, philosopher and theologian. As a result, the ideas and pedagogical views that he proclaimed and conceived in a coherent system all the more deserve our interest and research. This article meets some of the abovementioned needs. The research effort of the author in this article concentrates mainly on presenting the basic assumptions of Zenkovskiy’s pedagogical concept and the inspirations behind them in the beginning stages of its formation. This also includes the so-called Kievan period of Zenkovskiy’s life spanning from 1900 to 1919. This was certainly the time when he crystalized his research interests as a psychologist and educator, which were reflected in the pedagogical concept he created.
