Education in community archives: the KARTA Centre and the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation

In general, community archives are grass-roots documentary initiatives built around a broadly defined community, which collect, preserve, describe and provide access to historical sources concerning a previously chosen topic, e.g. local history and traditions, a social movement, a minority, an ethnic group, an event or a person. The phenomenon of community archiving is not new, but only several years ago it started to be described by scholars in Poland. The article describes educational activities performed by two biggest and most influential community archives in Poland: the KARTA Centre Foundation in Warsaw and the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation in Toruń. Actions of these archives are shown referring to general understanding of education in historical archives, as well as specific situation of Polish archives, especially their mission to promote historical knowledge and local identity. Also promotional qualities of educational endeavours in archives are stressed.

Archival Science is currently the most important archive journal, published in English since 2001. The aim of this article is to analyse articles published in that journal in the years 2011–2020. Four types of issues were analysed: the authors’ affiliations, geographical characteristics of articles, research methods and the subject of the published texts. As a result, it was noted that authors of articles come mostly from English-speaking countries (which confirms the trend from the years 2001–2010, studied by Eric Ketelaar in 2010) and when the subject of an article focuses on a specific geographical area, it concerns English-speaking countries as well. It was observed that many research articles do not present specific research methods and those that do mention not only traditional methods, such as archival research and a literature review, but also methods characteristic of social sciences (e.g. an interview, observation, survey). Ten most popular subjects described in the analysed texts include: digital issues, the underprivileged, state archives and documentation, the history of archives, human rights, decolonisation, ethics, preparing archival materials, social archives, the profession of an archivist and documentation manager.

„Archival Science” to najważniejsze obecnie czasopismo archiwistyczne, publikowane w języku angielskim od 2001 r. Celem artykułu jest analiza treści tekstów opublikowanych na jego łamach w latach 2011–2020. Analizie poddano cztery grupy zagadnień: afiliacje autorów, geograficzną charakterystykę artykułów, stosowane metody badawcze oraz tematykę publikowanych tekstów. W efekcie badań zauważono, iż autorzy artykułów pochodzą głównie z kręgu krajów anglosaskich (co potwierdza stan dla lat 2001–2010, poddany badaniu przez Erica Ketelaara w 2010 r.), a tematyka artykułów, o ile koncentruje się na jakimś obszarze geograficznym, powiela tę samą koncentrację na obszarach kręgu anglosaskiego. Zaobserwowano, że znaczna część publikacji naukowych nie przedstawia konkretnych metod badawczych, natomiast te, które to robią, wskazują zarówno na tradycyjne metody, takie jak badania archiwalne i analiza literatury, jak również na metody charakterystyczne dla nauk społecznych (np. wywiad, obserwacja, ankieta). Dziesięć najpopularniejszych tematów opisywanych w analizowanych tekstach to: zagadnienia cyfrowe, the underprivileged, państwowe archiwa i dokumentacja, historia archiwów, prawa człowieka, dekolonizacja, etyka, opracowanie archiwaliów, archiwa społeczne, zawód archiwisty i zarządcy dokumentacją.

Artykuł jest studium porównawczym dwóch cyfrowych archiwów społecznych (Cyfrowego Archiwum Łodzian Miastograf.pl oraz Bronowickiego Archiwum Społecznego)na podstawie badań terenowych tychże archiwów przeprowadzonych w ramach strategii studium przypadku. Autorka w skrócie prezentuje zastosowaną metodologię, przebieg badania oraz wykorzystane źródła (wywiady, obserwacje, artykuły naukowe i prasowe, strony internetowe i profile na portalach społecznościowych, dokumentacja urzędowa uzyskana w ramach dostępu do informacji publicznej). W dalszej części tekstu autorka zwraca uwagę na ujawniające się dzięki porównaniu zebranych danych podobieństwa oraz różnice między dwoma inicjatywami. Wśród podobieństw wymienia rodzaj gromadzonych przez archiwa materiałów (historie mówione w oryginale i kopie innych materiałów, zwł. fotografii), lokalna tematyka zasobów oraz wpływ specyfiki miejsca na kształt archiwum, a także realizowane cele społeczne i projektowy charakter działalności. Wśród różnic autorka zauważa odmienne sposoby gromadzenia, opisywania i udostępniania materiałów oraz archiwistyczne przygotowanie koordynatorki Bronowickiego Archiwum Społecznego.

The article is a comparative study of two digital community archives (the Digital Archive of Łódź Citizens Miastograf.pl and the Community Archive of Bronowice) based on field studies of these archives conducted as a part of case study strategy. The author shortly presents the methodology and course of the research, as well as sources used in it (interviews, observations, scientific and press articles, websites and social network pages, office records accessed as public information). Then the author shows similarities and differences between the two archives found thanks to comparison of the collected data. Among similarities she mentions the type of collected materials (oral histories in original and copies of other types of documents, especially photographs), local subject of the collections and impact of specific local characteristics to the shape of the archives, as well as social objectives and activity based on projects. Among differences she names various ways of acquiring, describing and providing access to the materials and archival knowledge of the coordinator of the Community Archive of Bronowice.
