Support for less favoured areas is a one of the tool of the rural development that is co-financed by Guarantee Section of European Agricultural Guarantee and Guidance Section. In the publication the authoress analyses the differences in approach and importance of the support for 15 European Union member countries.

The article presents the results of field research concerning the implementation of the Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (SAPARD) in Poland. Surveys covering farmers-applicants for assistance available under the programme were conducted in two parts of Mazowieckie voivodeship: in its eastern part (former Bialystok voivodeship) and in the area around Warsaw. The aim of the surveys was to collect the opinions of farmers about the programme at different stages of its implementation.

The article outlines the activity of the European Academy for Sustainable Rural Development, its concepts, its objectives and principles. The authoresses concentrate their attention chiefly on the presentation of one sphere of the Academy's activity - the organization of Summer Academies, which they do on the example of the Fourth Edition of the Summer Academy (June 2005, Ilmajoki, Finland) that they have themselves attended.Special emphasis has been laid on the teaching methodology applied during the Summer Academy courses.

The phenomenon and the notion of social capital are not new, but they are being approached and discussed in the context of new concepts of sustainable development of rural areas. The authoressess present the main conclusions and observations from an international Summer Academy devoted to the issue of social capital of rural areas that was organized in Finland .
