Based on analyse of S. K. Langer ́s work, the author points out to her philosophical thinking principles that became the basis of her art concept. This American woman philosopher forms one of the American aesthetics posts. The author is going to depict the connections between Langer ́s philosophy of art and her „aesthetics of art“, being conceptually completed by her students, e. g. N. Goodman, A. C. Danto and others. The author is also going to pay a special attention to Langer ́s understanding of meaning in comparison with E. Cassirer, L. Wittgenstein, Ch. S. Peirce and A. N. Whitehead, who formed the theoretical background of her considerations. Towards the end itself, the author is going to show the possibilities of Langer ́s aesthetics applied on the 20th century art.

The background of the author’s thoughts is a radical critique of art and science by J. J. Rousseau and genuine aesthetic and moral disposition of a human being outlined by I. Kant in his pre-critic works. According to the author, the art of twentieth century reveals (comments, extremely magnifies, contemplates, designates, creates metaphors, asks the questions) problems of a “nature of a contemporary man”. The author illustrates possible consequences of Rousseau’s critique of an art and science in the present and the shifts of natural aesthetic dispositions, as named by Kant in the contemporary art.

The author considers arts (on the axis between the author-work-perceiver) as various forms of understanding and misunderstanding at the same time. The misunderstandings have several causes (cultural, religious, political, social, personal, artistic, aesthetic) and complicate or transform the way of perception and understanding of artworks and produce what the author calls "hushing" or shading aesthetic and artistic qualities of the work. The inability of recognize aesthetic qualities of an artwork complicate its aesthetic effect on the recipient and causes various forms of hostility towards art as a creation and against specific works of art and their authors.

Thomas Mann's novel Doctor Faustus is a multi-layered work that elicits different, often conflicting and contradictory reflections, analysis and interpretation. In the novel are thematised many literary, social, historical, philosophical, musical theory and aesthetic problems. In this paper we focus on the questions of aesthetic potentiality modelled of literary event, to possible ways of perception and understanding of the literary text, its potential relationship to the real facts past and present. As a methodological basis we will use the philosophical and aesthetic concept of N. Goodman and by him explained the essence of making metaphors, "image as", exemplification and making of aesthetic semiosis. We will point out the difficulty of comparing literary text with the real reality (past and present), the problem of "mythical" and "demythical" potential of literary text in relation to the problem of art, artist, art, art perceiver.
