Artykuł jest poświęcony książce Ewy Bieńkowskiej Dom na Rozdrożu i dotyczy problematyki współczesnej kobiecej autobiografii pisanej „w rodzinie”. W interpretacji tej narracji wspomnieniowej, która jest właściwie esejem autobiograficznym, autorka artykułu podejmuje przede wszystkim takie kwestie, jak relacje rodzinne – ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kulturowych i społecznych dyskursów dotyczących kobiecych rodzinnych więzi – a także indywidualizm, podmiotowość, emancypacja oraz wiążące się z nimi doświadczenia funkcjonowania członków rodziny zarówno w przestrzeni społeczno-politycznej, jak i prywatnej.

The article is about Dom na Rozdrożu by Ewa Bieńkowska and concerns problems with contemporary female autobiography written ‘inside family.’ The author of the article interprets this flashback narration, which is actually autobiographical essay, by posing questions about such issues as: family relations – especially cultural and social discourses of female family connections – also individualism, subjectivity, emancipation and experiences of performing family members as well as in private space.

Tekst stanowi próbę interpretacji wspomnieniowego tomu Marcelego Najdera zatytułowanego Rewanż. Diariusz pisany w ukryciu przez około osiemnaście miesięcy, podczas trwającej w Kołomyi Zagłady, uzupełniony o zapiski sporządzone tuż po wojnie (w latach pięćdziesiątych), pełni rolę świadectwa ocalonego z Holocaustu żydowskiego małżeństwa. Narrację Najdera uzupełniają nieliczne, ale niezwykle istotne zapiski jego żony – Poli Najder.

The article is an attempt at interpretation of flashback narration of Marceli Najder, entitled Rewanż (Revenge). Diary written in secret by about eighteen months during the Holocaust in the Kołomyja, supplemented for notes drafted right after the war (in the fifties), is also the testimony of the Jewish marriage rescued from the Holocaust. Few, but very important notes of his wife – Pola Najder – complements the narration of Najder.

The article is a discussion of Patrycja Dołowy’s book which contains conver-sations with Holocaust children, the survivors of Shoah. Its main theme are relations of Jewish children with their both “biological” and “foster” mothers. The topic is a complex one, for it relates to persons confronting the Holocaust trauma, their unstable, fractured identity, and more often than not, the lack of knowledge about one’s family fates and roots. The mother in those stories eludes a unifying, common, and typical definition. The cases described in the stories of Holocaust children undermine the simplifying socio-cultural constructs relating to mothers, liquefy the binary distinctions into “biol-ogical” and “foster”, Jewish and Polish; and transform the framework of speaking about motherhood and childhood.

How to Explain to the Child What Auschwitz Was? Annette Wieviorka: Czym było Auschwitz? Rozmowy z moją córką. Przeł. Paulina Tarasewicz. Gdańsk, Wydawnictwo w Podwórku, 2015, ss. 92. In Auschwitz Explained to My Daughter – which is a conversation between Annette Wieviorka and her daughter Mathilde – a Jewish‑French historian describes to a French teenager, who is also a representative of the third generation descendent, what exactly Auschwitz was and how it has affected her life and her family’s lives. During this conversation Wieviorka has to face a difficult double role – of being a mother and a historian – and cope with complicated questions about the Holocaust experiences, which are in fact unspeakable, irrational, and out of any order.
