Początki państwowości Stanów Zjednoczonych stanowią niezwykle interesujący przypadek jeśli mamy zamiar badać relację między indywidualizmem a postulatem budowania dobra wspólnego. Możemy bowiem wyróżnić rzeczywiste procesy tworzenia się wspólnoty niemal od samego początku (co nie jest wykonalne na przykład w Europie) i prześledzić, w jaki sposób określone idee filozoficzne i religijne wpływały na jej kształt. W swoim artykule omawiam przede wszystkim propozycje Benjamina Franklina. Rozważania te nie mają jednak wyłącznie charakteru historycznego. Wspólnota Amerykanów stanowi bowiem wciąż punkt odniesienia dla wielu społeczeństw i państw przechodzących proces transformacji, jak również dla Unii Europejskiej. W artykule krótko rozważę, jakie znaczenie, na najogólniejszym poziomie, możemy nadać postulatowi czerpania z amerykańskich wzorców.

The origins of the United States of America are highly interesting if we are to investigate the relations between the idea of individualism and the idea (the postulate) of the common good. This is because we can empirically discriminate the real processes of creating a society in fact from its very beginning (which is not possible, for example, in Europe). Thus, we can also get to know how certain philosophical as well as religious ideas influenced these processes. The considerations are not only historical. The American society is still the reference point for many societies, and for the European Union too. Hence, I will try to characterize very briefly what it could mean to model the EU on the USA.
