Fairness is a major premise behind the concept of sustainable development. It cannot be attained without the involvement and co-operation of states, enterprises and consumers. Firms which embrace the idea of sustainable development take efforts to pursue socially responsible policies. The present paper discusses the relationship between the two concepts.

The achievement of goals regarding sustainable development requires radical reforms of the way of thinking with reference to the aims of management and doing business and also redefinition of the approach to the problem of satisfaction of needs (consumption). The idea of permanent consumption, which results from the issue of sustainable development, is not tantamount to a demand that the needs should be limited, but it entails a demand for another approach to ways of their satisfaction, i.e. for such consumption which does not generate unnecessary environmental and social costs. To meet this demand, a rise in activity of the public sector is essential.

The article is aimed at making an attempt of answering the question what emerges from the development of methodology of science in general which can be considered equivalent to evolution of models of validation of scientific knowledge and how can the methodology of economic sciences benefit from this development. Does it lead to developing a uniform methodology of methodological sciences or conversely, does it contribute to increasing the diversity of research approaches in economics? The article presents, in a synthetical and systematized way, rationalistic, empirical and holistic models of validation of the scientific knowledge and conclusions for the methodology of economic sciences. The author highlights the richness of possible approaches to research problems in economy and business administration and emphasises fundamental criteria of selection of approach which are: the accuracy of research and discovery of truth.

The article is a presentation of legal mechanisms as an institution which creates business in accordance with the concepts of new institutional economy. The essence and functions of law, mechanism of shaping the economy by the law and potential models of law as the institution regulating the economic system have been presented. In addition, the problem of legal awareness with decision makers and economic subjects has been highlighted.
