People who discriminate against selected categories of persons and those discriminated against coexist in every society. Numerous studies indicate that the situation of women on the labour market is more difficult than that of men, which possibly means that, in the professional sphere, women are disadvantaged in relation to men. This paper is aimed at identifying groups which may be interested in the discrimination of women in terms of employment and the reasons for such discrimination and self-discrimination, i.e. the fact that women agree to work on worse conditions than men.
This paper discusses theories that attempt to explain the existence of economic inequalities among social groups in the labour market in the context of the theory of competitive labour market and the determinants of these inequalities. The author focuses on the hypothesis of crowding in several occupations, the theory of discrimination, the human capital theory, the theory of information cost, labour market signaling theory, the limited spatial mobility of women hypothesis and Rosen’s model of discrimination. According to these theories, inequalities are determined by: professional segregation, intentional wage discrimination resulting from the propensity to discriminate observed among employers, employees and clients of the dominant group, poorer human capital resources of certain social groups, diversified levels of individual abilities, skills and qualifications, employers’ belief in lower productivity of certain social groups, the cost of information about the suitability of job applicants, the cost of fluctuations, limited spatial mobility of women due to their social roles, self-selection and misplacement of employees in jobs.
The paper is aimed at presenting legal regulations imposed by International Labour Organization, the United Nations and the European Union, and regarding gender equality in professional life. Issues relating to discrimination against women on labour market have been addressed by international institutions for over 60 years.
This paper describes theories that attempt to explain the existence of economic inequalities among social groups in the labour market in the context of the doctrine of market segmentation. The determinants of these inequalities are also presented. The paper focuses on the following issues: statistical segmentation, the concept of the internal and external market, the concept of the dual labour market, the theory of dual economy, the peripherality theory, the theory of discrimination on the labour market and the concept of labour market as an arena. The determinants of inequalities resulting from these theories are as follows: labour market segmentation according to the features specific to various social groups or according to the characteristics of the labour market, the rules for the selection of employees, employers’ interests regarding the training of employees, insufficient support of trade unions, socialisation, assigning to each social group actual or apparent qualities or social roles, bad habits gained by secondary workers, employment discontinuity, low professional identity, dissipation, attitudes and values inimical to stability and continuity.

Dodatkowo w celu przeprowadzenia analizy subiektywnej oceny sytuacji materialnej gospodarstw domowych skonstruowano indeks subiektywnej oceny sytuacji materialnej.

The aim of this paper is to show the correlation between the surplus of household's available income per capita over expenditures compared with the subjective assessment of household’s financial standing in Poland. Additionally, the diversification of real income, real expenses and surplus of the said variables at households from certain socio-economic groups in Poland was shown. Additionally, to evaluate subjective assessment of financial statement of households, the index of subjective assessment of financial standing was constructed. The data on household’s budgets obtained regularly by GUS was applied to carry out this study. The study was carried out from 2003 to 2013. The data shown there is a significant correlation between household’s own assessment of financial standing and surplus of income over expenditures (correlation coefficientin 2003 was 0.778 and in 2013 it was 0.862) as well as strong correlation (correlation coefficient was 0.925) between the changes in household’s own assessment of financial standing and changing surplus. Additionally, it was determined that the highest surplus of income was not produced by households with the highest income. In 2003, the highest surplus was produced by white- and blue-collar workers, while in 2013 by farmers and white-collar workers. The most considerable changes within the time of study occurred in farmers’ households. Although the surplus of real income over eexpenditures was increasing within the time of study, it was noticed that from 2010 on the subjective assessment of financial standing was decreasing in the households of workers (both blue- and white-collar) and those self-employed.
This article evaluates the discrepancies in the distribution of household income in selected European States. The article focuses on the analysis of Gini coefficient before and after taxation and social transfers in selected European States as well as it analyses the impact of taxation and social transfers on discrepancies in household income in selected States. The results show that with regard to absolute values discrepancies in household income are largely reduced by taxation and social transfers in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Finland, as to relative values: in Belgium, Austria, Finland and Slovenia while they are the least reduced, with regard to both absolute and relative values, in Iceland, Switzerland, Greece and the Netherland.

The author of this article made an attempt to verify the following hypothesis, namely increasing diversity of household incomes from certain employment and nonemployment sources among Polish provinces from 2005 to 2012. The unit data on house¬hold budget studies (BBGD) from 2005 and 2012 provided by GUS was applied to carry out this study. Based on the data, it was determined that comparing the provinces in Poland, the level of diversity in income sources was the highest in paid employment in non¬labour jobs (in 15 provinces), running a farm (in 11 provinces) and paid employment in labour jobs (in 9 provinces) as to non-employment sources the level of diversity was the highest in unemployment benefits (in 13 provinces) and pensions (in 11 provinces).
The goal of this article is to verify the hypothesis that from 2000 to 2011 the discrepancies between material living standards in the countryside and cities of different sizes blurred in Poland year by year. On the basis of the research conducted it has been determined that over the first decade of the 21st century the discrepancy between the living standards in Poland’s rural and urban areas decreased in terms of the amount and structure of expenditure per capita, volume of quantitative consumption, housing conditions and household equipment including durable goods. This conclusion has been drawn because the level of examined variables, both in the countryside and cities or towns of different sizes over the years 2000–2011, approached in most cases the level observed for the whole country.
The dispersion of household disposable income per capita in each class of residence (i.e. six) was estimated for households in Poland. Then, the dispersion of income between the classes was analysed. The computation was carried out separately for subsequent years from 1998 to 2012. The study shows that the households in Poland are differentiated with regard to income per capita by types of residence, however, the differences within the groups are much bigger than the differences between the groups. What is particularly surprising, the share of between-group variance in total variance in the population under study was negligible small (just a few percent) compared to the share of the mean within-group variance (more than 90 percent).
