The article presents history of selected methods of academic libraries evaluation, from the 1st part of the 18th century up till 2008. The authoress refers to publications being often cited in specialized bibliographies, as essential for this topic. Literature analysis was done to select the most important research topics in a historical aspect. Development of quantitative surveys in the United States, and their influence on the European countries was discussed.
