What May Library and Information Science Offer to Personal Information Management?

Purpose/Thesis: The development of personal information management (PIM) suggests a new area of interest for library and information science (LIS) practitioners and researchers. Basing on the research the article investigates the application of technological solutions for PIM in LIS. Approach/Methods: In the presented research, the critical analysis of the literature was used to explain the relationship between PIM and LIS and to prepare an empirical study focused on the perception of the usefulness of PIM tools in the area of LIS practice and research. The empirical study was conducted with a mixed methodology encompassed both quantitative and qualitative methods. Results and conclusions: The analysis showed that the solutions offered by the LIS practitioners and researchers in the field of PIM have already been correctly defined. Some initiatives in the field of open access, digitization of collections, modernization of integrated library systems or the implementation of ICT in education are already being implemented. However, LIS practitioners and researchers are primarily perceived as offering high-quality, verified and truthful information accessible through applications, digital platforms and other modern technological solutions. Originality/Value: Presented results may inspire LIS practitioners and researchers to further development of the offer of their institutions.

Cel/Teza: Rozwój zarządzania informacją indywidualną (personal information management, PIM) wskazuje nowe pole badawcze dla teoretyków i praktyków z zakresu bibliotekoznawstwa i informacji naukowej. W artykule prześledzono zastosowanie rozwiązań technicznych w zakresie PIM w bibliotekoznawstwie i informacji naukowej. Koncepcja/Metody badań: W przedstawionych badaniach wykorzystano krytyczną analizę literatury, aby wyjaśnić związek między PIM a bibliotekoznawstwem i informacją naukową oraz przygotować badanie empiryczne skoncentrowane na postrzeganiu przydatności narzędzi PIM w obszarze praktyki i badań bibliotekoznawstwa i informacji naukowej. Badanie empiryczne przeprowadzono przy użyciu metody mieszanej, obejmującej metody zarówno badań ilościowych, jak i jakościowych. Wyniki i wnioski: Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że rozwiązania proponowane przez teoretyków i praktyków bibliotekoznawstwa i informacji naukowej w zakresie PIM zostały dotychczas poprawnie zdefiniowane. Niektóre inicjatywy z zakresu otwartego dostępu, digitalizacji kolekcji, unowocześnienia zintegrowanych systemów bibliotecznych czy zastosowań technologii informacyjno-komunikacyjnych w edukacji zostały już skutecznie wdrożone. Jednakże teoretycy i praktycy z zakresu bibliotekoznawstwa i informacji naukowej postrzegani są przede wszystkim jako oferujący rozwiązania oparte na wysokiej jakości, zweryfikowanej i rzetelnej informacji, dostępnej przez aplikacje mobilne, platformy cyfrowe oraz inne nowoczesne rozwiązania technologiczne. Oryginalność/Wartość poznawcza: Omówione wyniki badania mogą stanowić inspirację dla teoretyków i praktyków bibliotekoznawstwa i informacji naukowej do dalszego rozwijania oferty ich instytucji.

„Waldenburger Heimatbote” ukazuje się nieprzerwanie od 1949 r. i jest pismem adresowanym do niemieckich przesiedleńców powiatu wałbrzyskiego, którzy opuścili Dolny Śląsk po 1945 r. W artykule autor zaprezentował czasopismo, scharakteryzował elementy kultywujące pamięć o przeszłości i ocalające od zapomnienia ludzi, fakty, miejsca dawnego Wałbrzycha, oraz podkreślił znaczenie tego typu prasy dla lokalnej społeczności.

“Waldenburger Heimatbote” has been published since 1949. The periodical is addressed to the German displaced persons from Wałbrzych county, who left Lower Silesia after 1945. The author is going to make a presentation of the periodical and to characterize those its elements which cultivate the memory of the past and rescue from oblivion the people, facts, places of the former Wałbrzych, and also to emphasize the importance of this type of press for the local communities.

The article presents Polish libraries automation since 1989 and the role of “Library Review”, the oldest scientific periodical for librarians in Poland, in popularization of its main directions. The automation was introduced to Polish libraries in mid-sixties, first as an experiment, then as an informational, bibliographical and library tool. After 1989 librarians could compare their experiences with other libraries from abroad and find out about new library trends. The texts published in “Library Review” present opinions about implementations of MARC format, usage the integrated library systems and organization of central catalogue. The necessity of protection the most valuable items caused the interest in digitalization. Finally the on-line services and usefulness of Internet were described. The articles published in “Library Review” show main directions of changes in Polish librarianship for the last years and are a proof that editorial board of “Library Review” has been paying a great attention to the new technologies.

The author presents the result of biographical research conducted among of Herman Kruk, a librarian, political and social activist, and active creator of the B. Grosser Library in Warsaw and the Vilna Ghetto Library. Information gathered led to a fuller presentation of his achievements, especially thanks to the materials and autobiographical memoirs, published recently.

Autorzy przedstawili założenia nowej edycji publikacji Życie książki autorstwa Jana Muszkowskiego. Opracowanie tekstu głównego tej publikacji wymagało skorzystania z szerokiego materiału badawczego i archiwalnego. Na takiej podstawie źródłowej została przygotowana edycja krytyczna, opatrzona wstępem naukowym, aparatem krytycznym i komentarzami. W dalszej części – na przykładzie przygotowanej do wydania pracy Życie książki – autorzy scharakteryzowali cele i motywy ponownego wydawania publikacji naukowych z 2. połowy XX w., sposoby oznaczania fragmentów przestarzałych, zdezaktualizowanych i niejasnych – w celu jak najpełniejszego odzwierciedlenia woli autora.

The authors present foundations of a new edition of Życie książki written in 1951 by Jan Muszkowski. The development of the main text of this publication required conducting extensive research and using many archival materials which helped prepare the critical edition with a scientific preface, a critical apparatus and comments. On this basis the authors characterize goals and motives for reediting scientific publications from the 2nd half of the 20th century, together with methods of tagging the outdated or obsolete fragments.
