The article informs about an international linguistic conference held in honour of Professor Ján Horecký - one of the most famous linguist in Slovakia - on 20th - 22nd January 2010 in Smolenice. The conference was organised by L'udovít Štúr Institute of Linguistics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Institute of Oriental Studies of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Slovak Linguistic Society. The article very briefly describes content of all papers that were presented during the conference that in various aspects continued in a linguistic work of Professor Horecký (e. g. general linguistics, language communication, phonological, grammatical and lexical research, language dynamics sociolinguistics etc.). The author also values the significance of Ján Horecký for the Slovak linguistics very highly.

The paper deals with the certain problems concerning semantic structure of sentence on the basis of the theoretical and methodological postulates and analysis presented in the work Semantic Structure of Slovak Sentence (2012) by Eva Tibenská. The paper describes some open questions concerning the investigation how semantic and syntactic aspects of sentence structure cooperate. The paper concentrates especially on problems arising with the classification of predicates and delimiting the semantic roles of subject and object participants in the sentence structures. A special attention is put on the questions connected with the semantic structures of subject less sentence and the understanding of causative sentences in the language. The paper also analyses the meaning of the structures in which dative participant occurs with regard to its semantic interpretation.

The article is a review of monograph of well known Czech linguists Lucia Saicová Římalová: Selected Verbs of Movement in the Czech. Study from Cognitive Philology. The review article supposes the work of Saicova Římalová to be an outstanding publication not only in the Czech but also in the broad Slavic context. From the theoretical and methodological basis of cognitive linguistics the author analyses the problem of verbs of movement in a very precise, complex an original way. Her minute interpretation is an extension of the traditional lexicological and grammatical view on the analysed type of verbs.

The study provides a synchronic account of evidenciality markers produced by grammaticalization processes in Slovak. While Slovak is not currently counted as having a grammaticalized evidenciality system, the high text frequency of verbal and adverbial operators that spred evidential scope over clauses is a clear indication of a great potential for such a system to be grammaticalized. The study describes two grammaticalization channels: from verb to parenthesis and particle, and from qualification adverb to commentary (sentence) adverb and particle. The research of grammaticalization steps is based on examination of material gained from the Slovak National Corpus.

In the past few decades, the theory of valence has received a growing recognition as a syntactic model that is more fruitful than ones provided by a traditional grammar. Within the Slovak context, the first valence dictionary was published in 1998. This paper has been motivated by preparation of Valence Dictionary of the Slovak Verbs on Corpus Basis. The study deals with the theoretical and methodological issues of valence processing. An attempt has been made to solve some problematic aspects of valence theory and practice, especially those of semantic classification of verbs, delimitation of semantic roles, distinguishing valence complements from non-valence ones, etc. The paper is based on study of material gained from the Slovak National Corpus. The list of two-level semantic roles and the verb semantic classes outlined in Valence Dictionary of Slovak Verbs (1998) was made more precise in order to achieve a coherent description of complements and verb meanings.

The study presents the project of Dictionary of Multi – word Naming Units with regard to its general methodology. The development of a comprehensive dictionary of multi – word units including non-idiomatic, non- proper and non-terminological expressions is a very demanding task. To accomplish this task it is necessary to make a distinction between free collocations and multi – word units proper and non-proper, idiomatic and non-idiomatic multi – word expressions. Therefore the collection of data from dictionaries of Slovak language as well as data gained from Slovak National Corpus will be inevitable. The dictionary will also provide equivalents of respective naming units in five languages (English, German, French, Spanish and Russian).
