This is an interpretation of 'On a theme from St John Perse', one of the most intriguing poems by Jan Lechon, published in his late phase (1956). Its title and motto, with its evocation of St John Perse's 'Il naissait un poulain' establish a context which is explicated in this article. Moreover, the authoress traces all references to St John Perse in Lechon's Diary and examines the record of a meeting of the two poets. Apart from listing Lechon's evocations of 'Anabase', this interpretation examines his symbolism of life and death in connection with the motif of a statue awakening to life. This motif, which has some personal connotations for Lechon, recurs in a number of his poems.
