Western Ukraine, the former area in south-eastern Poland, abounds in various kinds of historical buildings that reflect the complicated history of this land. The colourful picture of the country is marked by sacred buildings of various religious denominations, splendid wooden architecture, castles, palaces and heterogeneous tissue of historical towns. Traces of the past in these locations are dear to Poles and Ukrainians alike. People who live in such surroundings increasingly appreciate their heritage as the important element of their identity. Historians of art and architecture took a serious interest in historical environment and monuments already in the 19th century. One of such historical sites is Zhovkva.
