The paper advocates the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for the transcription of Slovak sounds. Two main types of transcription are presented - allophonic and phonemic. Furthermore, a distinction is made between a detailed (narrow) allophonic transcription and a simplified (broad) allophonic transcription. The pros and cons of the original Slovak transcription and the IPA transcription are discussed, and it is suggested that the IPA may be a useful tool for some linguists and language students.
