The authoress ponders on a topical and a controversial dilemma – whether and to what extent quantitative criteria of evaluation can be applied to science components. These components are considered to be both subjective and objective, e.g. scientists, scientific associations, institutions, publications, etc. All of them are submitted to opinions and estimation. The objective methods have been searched for a long time, and the controversy over their rightness continues. They are divided into two basic groups: peer review and numerical. The first is also called qualitative, the other quantitative. This differentiation may suggest that the quantitative methods do not comply with the quality criteria. Another important issue is the relation between scientific production quality and its quantity. The subject is very broad. For comprehensive discussion it would be necessary to present all methods and techniques applied, to draw comparisons, mention examples of their use, and results obtained.

Price's scientometric ideas started a new style in science of science research. He uncovered laws and regularities od science development that for many times proved to be right in research of scholars from all over the world. But 40 years before Price published his fundamental writings, Florian Znaniecki and, ten years later, Maria and Stanislaw Ossowski presented similar views on science. They formulated programme of science of science research and postulated the use of new research methods more exact than before. This coherence of thoughts of the Polish scholars and those of Price reveal many similar ideas as regards basic problems of science of science.The analysis of certain elements of scientific life in Poland (some of them studied over time span from 200 to 400 years) confirm Price's views and prove that general regularities derived from the analysis of global science development are also valid in the realm of Polish science
