The paper is an attempt to present Pavel Florensky’s philosophical inspirations and criticism as well as their influences on his own philosophy. The issue appears to be a thorny one as attested to by among others German researcher Micheal Hagemeister whose article is quoted and discussed at length. The ambiguity of Florensky’s outlook and his intellectual constructs, their both “genius” and “inhuman” character – as construed by some researchers and interpreters – seems to be the result of his Platonic and Eastern Orthodox inspirations as well as of criticism of Kantianism. To Florensky, Kantianism personifies Western rationalism, which in turn is absolutely antithetical to the so-called Russian soul.

Stanowi to temat nieco kontrowersyjny, o czym świadczy m.in. przywoływany przeze mnie artykuł, jaki napisał niemiecki badacz Michael Hagemeister. Dwuznaczność konstrukcji intelektualnych Florenskiego, ich „genialność” a zarazem „nieludzkość” (według opinii niektórych badaczy i krytyków), jak się wydaje, wynika z inspiracji platonizmem i prawosławiem (swoiście rozumianym) oraz krytyki kantyzmuuosabiającego racjonalizm zachodnioeuropejski (według filozofa przeciwstawny duszy rosyjskiej).
Autorka przedstawia sylwetkę dziewiętnastowiecznego brytyjskiego przyrodnika George’a J. Mivarta. Omawia jego stanowisko wobec darwinowskiej teorii ewolucji. Mivart był ewolucjonistą. Odrzucał jednak mechanizm doboru naturalnego oraz uznawał istnienie nieprzekraczalnej granicy, jaka oddziela człowieka od zwierząt. Człowiek według niego to wyjątkowa istota, której dusza i umysł zostały stworzone w nadprzyrodzony sposób.

Author presents a profile of nineteenth-century British scientist George J. Mivart. She reviews his attitude towards Darwin’s theory of evolution. Although he was an evolutionist, he rejected mechanism of natural selection and presumed that there is an impassable boundary between human being and animals. In his opinion, human being is an extraordinary entity whose soul and mind were supernaturally created. Author also presents reactions of contemporary scientists and Roman Catholic Church to Mivart’s views.

This paper discusses role of Christian aesthetics for defining the religious identity of Old Rus’. Attempting a multidisciplinary approach, it follows the Hypatian Codex to trace the challenges and difficulties encountered by the introduction, with the Baptism of 988, of a new faith. Having reviewed historical surveys and sources and drawn upon the studies in paleography, archaeology, linguistics, and art history, the author emphasizes aesthetic aspect of Rus’ cultural evolution. In conclusion the paper maintains that the visual arts, such as architecture and sacral paintings, have played an essential role in the protracted process of absorption and subordination of the pagan tradition.
St. Theophan the Recluse (George Govorov, 1815-1894) has been remembered by theologians and researchers for his ascetic and moral writings that were original yet stayed within the tradition of Russian hesychasm. In teaching how to enter into a prayer dialogue with God, St. Theophan considered a moulding of one’s heart of the most important spiritual exercises; piety and turning one’s mind to God were seen as means to this end. In Poland, the work of this theologian is known not only in the Orthodox but also in the Catholic circles (Jan Pryszmont published a monograph about him in 1979). Nonetheless, there are only two translations of his powerful writings and a dozen miscellaneous articles. So, he remains somewhat underrepresented. In the article, the work of St. Theophan is described within the context of Russian hesychasm; I am pointing out those aspects of the theologian’s thought that Polish researchers are interested in the most, and outline the perspectives for further research.

The paper is an attempt to present philosophical views of one of the currently most prominent Russian thinkers, Sergey Khoruzhy, through the prism of critique of Pavel Florensky’s thought. The latter – a genius and a martyr (as he is thought to be) – like most of the religious philosophers of the so-called Silver Age of Russian culture, seems to be far removed from the mainsteam of Orthodox spiritual tradition – hesychasm. The said tradition can be described as energetism whereas Florensky’s thought is best viewed as essentialism. Energetism, a quite enigmatic concept from the Western perspective, appears as fundamental concept of Khoruzy’s own philosophical conception – synergetic anthropology. Khoruzhy recognizes importance of Florensky’s thought but he considers it of historical value only. These and other points are elaborated in presented paper.

Tradycję tę charakteryzuje bowiem energetyzm, a Florenskiego esencjalizm. Te i inne punkty zostały omówione w prezentowanym tekście.
The aim of this paper is to compare views on human nature as held by Karl Marx and Ivan Kireevsky. Despite the fact that Marx and Kireevsky expounded two totally different philosophical world views (such as slavophilia and dialectical materialism), both can be described as socialists: one scientific, the other utopian or religious one. In this regard, it turns out that some elements of their concepts of a human being are rather common. Both of them thought that man achieves his “completeness” or “integrality” in community, not by exclusively private efforts. Kireevsky envisioned his community as an Orthodox commune, while Marx his as a classless society. Analysis shows that both anthropological concepts were more reflecting of their utopian visions than any working social model.
Recenzja książki: S. Bulgakov, Philosophie der wirtschaft. Die welt als Wirtschaftsgeschehen, hg. Von Barbara Hallensleben und Regula M. Zwahlen, Münster: Aschendorff Verlag, 2014
Nikolai Berdyaev is the well-know Russian religious philosopher. He is famous mostly for works about dignity and freedom of man. These deliberations seems to be the utter base of all his philosophy, which we can call personalism. From that point of view, metaphysics of gender is founded on the respect and the human dignity. Berdyaev’s philosophy is in this aspect dedicated to woman, her relations to man, nature and God. Berdyaev made these relations complicated and my objective in this article is to make them clearer.
The article is an attempt to critically evaluate the manifestations of the philosophical culture sprouting in Rus’. With the baptism in the Byzantine Rite, Rus’ in the 10th century joined the family of Christian nations and defined the future direction of her own cultural development. The Middle Ages in Rus’ were eminently theocentric. Literature (which was mostly translated from the Greek in Bulgarian monasteries) had a religious character. Sacral content, assimilated in Rus’ mainly through the Old Church Slavonic (due to the scarce knowledge of Greek) had a decisive influence on formation of the philosophical worldview of Rus’ intellectual elite. The Bible thus became the main reference framework for the first Rus’ thinkers-philosophers: Ilarion of Kiev († 1055), Kirill of Turov († 1183) and Kliment Smolatič († 1164). Ilarion of Kiev, the first metropolitan of the Kievan Rus’ in his rhetoric work (which postulated the superiority of the New Testament to the Old) expressed a philosophical thesis of the equality of all Christian nations before God. Kliment Smolatič, the second metropolitan of Rus’, in his Letter to Presbyter Foma, defended the allegorical method of interpretating the Bible. Kirill of Turov, in his turn, in his Parable of the human soul and body allegorically tried to answer the question about the relationship of the body and the soul. For the Rus’ thinkers the content of the Bible served as a pretext for philosophical reflection, e.g. on the role of man in the universe, on the nature of reality, on the relation between matter and spirit. In their works we find the beginnings of the theory of knowledge, metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics.
Тhis paper focuses on the philosophical issue known as the metaphysics of the heart within Orthodox Christianity – both Russian and Byzantie versions. Russian religious thought is based on patristic tradition. Influences and connections can be seen in Florensky’s philosophy of All-Unity. This Russian philosopher was highly inspired by Gregory Palamas, fourteenth-century Eastern Church. These two Orthodox thinkers, mainly their metaphysics of heart are objects of interests.
