The interests of historians, archaeologists, ethnographers and conservationists overlap during research of mills as medieval and modern technical buildings. For archaeologist, a question of research is interesting in connection with the reconstruction of historical landscape. We analysed historical maps and historical written records as well as results of archaeological field survey during the research of mills in Kostoľany valley. Due to synthesis of obtained knowledge we were able to localize five historical water mills with a rich history situated on the stream Drevenica in Kostoľany valley. However, there are still many questions to be answered.

Twelve archaeological features were uncovered during the archaeological excavation, which took place on the route of the canalization construction in the location Veľký Šárad, in 2005. Six features and the Early Medieval cultural layer were situated in the southern part of the canalization construction. The mildly embedded features, numbers 04/05 and 05/05, were of rectangular layout and of the earth-and-timber construction. These features are archaeologically interpreted as most probably pit houses. In the pit houses, primarily objects of everyday use were found. The pottery characteristic for 8th century AD predominates among movable archaeological finds. The iron slag fragments represent local metallurgical production of iron. The investigated archaeological features, together with previously excavated settlement features uncovered in the locations Medzi cestami and Pri vinárni, presumably originally formed the same settlement site.

Repeated archaeological research conducted since 2012 have supported the existence of the Lusatian culture settlement also in the unfortified southern and south-eastern slopes of the Veľký Lysec peak, as well as in the platforms of the Malý Lysec peak. In the southern ridge of the Malý Lysec peak were found two lines of fortifications. Two oval depressed features, found in the saddleback between Veľký Lysec and Malý Lysec peak, relate more likely to traces of quarrying limonite than to the water tanks (cisterns). Presented assemblage of pottery fragments is not sufficient for the accurate dating of the fortified hill fort, but allows clear that the centre of settlement sites is dated back to the Hallstatt period. For today, only the modest medieval findings (Pl. II : 1, 2) are the first indication of the possible use of the settlement site in the Early Middle Age, which currently cannot be adequately assessed.
