The objective of this article is to challenge and destabilise existing approaches to state socialism as a historical period during which women remained passive observers of social and political realities. Beginning with the afterthought about the possibility of utilising some of the concepts and categories of feminist methodologies within the post-socialist context, I present results of the research conducted, between 2010-2014, with women active in communist parties and women’s organisations before 1989, in Poland and in Georgia. Drawing from in-depth interviews and archival documents, including the United Polish Workers Party and Women International Democratic Federation archives, I then examine three aspects of the experience of women active socially and politically under state socialism. First, I present diverse motives behind the decision to become a party member. Second, I explore the amount of autonomy that, in their own words, women active in the communist party and women’s organisations had at their disposal. And third, I look at the ways in which socialist activists can be positioned within existing narratives on feminism and women’s movements in post-socialism.

The paper addresses the issue of speech acts in charismatic evangelical groups. Its main thrust oscillates around the notion of prayer and its untypical character. The features that make this speech act unique comprise elements that betray traits of the magical function of language. At the same time there is a lack of classical forms of address, typical for more traditional Christian Churches.

Conscience is the light of truth, says a Catholic lesbian, Polish human rights activist. To her, it should be the key signpost in life. Obvious, though it may seem, being a non-heteronormative person in a democratic country may prove challenging. In addition, to reconcile one’s psychosexual orientation with religion requires breaking the ground and pushing the boundaries. Eventually, only a handful of people manage to further their own agenda. Th e present paper focuses on a personal narrative of a Polish lesbian who has managed to find the way to God. It is a case study which offers insights into how one manages to reconcile seemingly opposing identities. It is meant to reveal the stages of the process of coming to terms with one’s complicated social situation.

Sumienie jest światłem prawdy, mówi wierząca lesbijka, Polka oraz aktywistka broniąca praw człowieka. Jej zdaniem sumienie powinno być jedynym drogowskazem w życiu. Choć wydaje się to niemożliwe, jednakże bycie osobą nieheteronormatywną w kraju demokratycznym może okazać się wyzwaniem. Ponadto, pogodzenie sfery seksualności z przekonaniami religijnymi oznacza przełamywanie granic oraz wychodzenie poza przyjęte normy. Jedynie niektórym udaje się zrealizować ten plan. Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie narracji tożsamościowej polskiej lesbijki, której udało się odnaleźć własną drogę do Boga. Jest to studium przypadku ukazujące proces godzenia nieheteronormatywnej tożsamości z wyznawanymi przekonaniami o podłożu religijnym.

W artykule mowa jest o postrzeganiu oraz rozumieniu pojęcia wiara w Boga przez współcześnie żyjących wierzących Polaków. Na podstawie ankiet oraz wywiadów usiłuję odkryć dominujące profile semantyczne ujawniające obrazowanie w języku omawianego pojęcia. Moim zamiarem jest zbadanie potocznego obrazu wiary w Boga wśród osób reprezentujących różne odłamy chrześcijaństwa. W tym celu stosuję narzędzia wypracowane na gruncie polskiej etnolingwistyki, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kwestii profilowania pojęć. Jest to przydatne narzędzie językoznawcze, które umożliwia organizację różnych aspektów pojęcia w ramach jednej definicji.

The paper explores various ways of perceiving and understanding the notion of faith in God among contemporary Polish believers. Based on the data collected from questionnaires and interviews I try to uncover the dominant profiles of the construal of faith in the language. My intention is to study folk and colloquial images of faith among Christians representing different denominations. With this in mind, I use ethnolinguistic methodology, specifically the notion of a semantic profile which enables us to notice and organize various shades of meanings of a concept within the limits of its definition.
