This article considers the character of social relationships in an urban settlement and their significance for the quality of life in the residential area. It analyses the influence of time and physical space on the level of inter-human contacts and shows, taking specific examples, how established relationships contribute to the improvement of life in the locality. To address this issue the author chose the theoretical approach of social capital, which deals with the significance of social networks. A section of the largest settlement in Slovakia, Bratislava Petržalka, is the locality for his empirical research. Here he identifies social groups and opportunities; he analyses the influence of time and physical space on the level and quality of inter-human contacts. On the basis of specific examples he shows how established relationships contribute to raising the quality of life in the locality. The article outlines an applied approach in the renewal and development of settlements by means of social networks and social capital.

This paper analyses the history of sheep raising in Slovakia and especially in the city of Detva and the surrounding region (Podpoľanie). The so-called Wallachian colonization in the 14th century introduced a new type of sheep raising centred around the salaš, an isolated farm unit, practiced predominantly in mountainous regions and focused on milk production. This change had a profound effect not only on the population‘s food production, but also on a number of aspects of the traditional culture (dress, household production, folklore, customs etc.) in most of the territory of present-day Slovakia. Indeed the elements of the imported salaš culture, adapted to local conditions and developed in idiosyncratic ways, have become some of the major ethnic identifiers of the Slovak people. In Detva, sheep raising has always been closely tied to the traditional way of life. The - for this region typical - predominance of isolated farms came about as an extension of the Wallachian salaš culture. The focus on sheep raising motivated by the availability of grazing land created a unique individual form of sheep raising specific for the region of Podpoľanie.

This study is concerned with the issue of public space in contemporary social changes. The author believes that the key phenomenon in the process which is generally designated as globalisation is the speeding-up of development, an acceleration of changes in attitudes, models, values, and technologies. This cultural acceleration has a fundamental influence also on the perception of space and time. Since the mid-20th century at the latest, the category of space has come to the attention of sociocultural anthropology. The fundamental question to be explored is the mutual influence of space and social processes. Public space plays an important role also in the renewal and development of settlements, whether through the utilisation of social relationships or through cultural values (social and cultural capital). Finally, the author presents the relationship of inhabitants to the public spaces, taking the examples of Bratislava- Petržalka and Stupava. He shows how these spaces also contribute to the creation and construction of the residents’ relationship to the settlement. The involvement of residents in decision-making, in his view, is not just an expression of democracy at the local level but also a means of building a relationship and feeling of responsibility towards the locality, and a precondition for the sustainability of accomplished changes.
