Diagnosis in special education: a necessity with dangerous consequences Diagnosis in special education is difficult and its consequences are not always intentional. Diagnosis is conducted in order to support the child and his/her family in coping with disability, and to begin the process of rehabilitation. A process of branding and stigmatization, or a change in the life of a child which puts him/her in a situation of discomfort and suffering, may be an unintentional result of such a diagnosis. The art of good diagnosis, therefore, also calls for appropriate post diagnostic actions to maximize support on the one hand and reduce branding on the other.
