During the First World War the press of neutral Switzerland discussed a number of problems associated with the pro-independence aspirations of European nations -including the Polish question. The latter was particularly attractive for the Swiss reader since it was part of the inner divisions increasingly conspicuous in this country's public opinion as regards an assessment of the war. Romansch Switzerland, supporting the Entente, treated Polish independence as one of the elements of freedom-oriented wartime propaganda, although usually with due attention paid to Russian interests. The German-speaking part of the country, whose press, as a rule, presented the Polish question from the German vantage point, reacted differently. In this case, liberty-related ideals did not play such a significant part, and emphasis was placed rather on the practical consequences of the reconstruction of the Polish state. A discussion on ways of regaining independence conducted by the activists and the National Democracy to a certain extent overlapped the polemic in the Swiss press. A differentiation of the political and religious options of a given periodical is essential for evaluating the contents of its publications. At times, the presentation of the Polish question in Catholic and Protestant periodicals varied considerably.
