The attempts of women trying to go beyond the borders of traditional roles and behavior were not particularly welcome in the mid-1900’s although the main motive for the activity of women in the 19th century was patriotism. The second half of the 19th century witnessed the development of schooling for girls. Schools teaching particular professions were favored. The activity of women between the uprisings also intensified in periodical press. The birth of feminine press is associated with the general notion of women’s liberation which culminated in the second half of the 19th century. The matter of women was the subject of debate in Western Europe and North America in the second half of the 20th century. Those discussions pertained to the issues of the role and tasks of women in social life. The press aroused the need for intellectual creativity as well as social actions. Women became more noticeable in the sphere of literature and periodical press. The aim of the article is to present the editor, journalist and translator Zofia Seidlerowa born Kwiecinska (1859–1919) and her ideas published in “Bluszcz (Ivy)” on upbringing and educating girls in the partitioned territory of Poland at the turn of the centuries.

The aim of this article is to present the main titles of the books and pamphlets advertised in „Wiara” (1906-1909), a magazine which appeared in Warsaw. The paper particularly focuses on the publications on education of children and young people, customs, health and economics, drawing attention to the patriotic and moral values , presenting native history and the history of the Catholic Church, pointing to role models included in the lives of saints. The article also mentions books, the aim of which was an entertainment (fiction). In the era of partitions the issue of particular importance was to provide the proper education for the next generations of the Polish people. They could not attend Polish schools. It was necessary, therefore, to teach them in their family home. They were taught Polish identity, patriotism, respect for others, social solidarity. Developing the reading culture was one of the ways to shape the personality of the young man. Hence the magazine enabled readers to get acquainted with the critical opinions about the latest releases. The authors presented the titles worth reading as well as those books which were of no value.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, conducting catechetical activity in Poland was fraught with difficulty. With adverse political situation and the authorities that had partitioned the Polish territory striving to limit the influence of the Catholic Church as a bulwark of national identity, religious teaching in schools was actively hampered. Catechists who found themselves in a vulnerable situation could rely on the support of special religious magazines, such as the “Miesięcznik Katechetyczny i Wychowawczy” (“Catechetical and Educational Monthly”) (1911-1939), which published valuable information. It provided a lively discussion on catechetical issues, reported on the conventions and catechetical courses organised, and reviewed textbooks for religious education. The objective of the article is to depict religious teaching and education as well as the substantive and pedagogical problems related thereto. It is also to discuss the role of religious reading and music in the educational process according to the magazine. Particular emphasis was placed on the activities aimed at developing the personality of the young generation through the process of religious education and catechesis.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie obrazu nauczania i wychowania religijnego, problemów merytorycznych i pedagogicznych z nimi związanych, omówienie roli, jaką w procesie wychowania przypisywano we wspomnianym wyżej czasopiśmie lekturze i muzyce kościelnej. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na działania mające na celu kształtowanie charakteru młodego pokolenia poprzez proces wychowania religijnego i katechezę.

This article aims to present the views of Dr. Józef Starkman regarding the home treatment of sick children and young persons. The main point of the article underlines the importance of maintaining good hygiene in the rooms where sick people, including the children and the young spent their time. Starkman highlighted the roles of physical activity, mental hygiene, physical development, proper clothing and balanced, healthy eating. In his opinion, childhood habits tended to impact on adulthood. According to Starkman, the reasons for numerous health problems and disorders should have been defined on the basis of imbalanced diet, neglecting hygiene and poor sanitary conditions. He also emphasised deficiencies in physical activity and spiritual development as regards the children’s and youth’s time spent both at home and at school.

The Catholic press in the Kingdom of Poland at the beginning of the 20th century covered the situation of the Church in the changing social reality and discussed and critically commented on Western concepts of modernisation. Publicists searched for ways of shaping modern society and the defining the role of the Church in this process that suited domestic conditions. The discourse on modernity addressed issues of education and citizenship, among others. Magazines addressed mainly to the clergy and published over a longer period of time were used as representative subjects in the study, including Przegląd Katolicki, Ateneum Kapłańskie, Wiadomości Pasterskie, Kronika Diecezji Kujawsko- Kaliskiej, Kronika Diecezji Sandomierskiej, Przegląd Diecezjalny w Kielcach and Wiadomości Archidiecezjalne Warszawskie. They promoted contemporary knowledge about the ways in which the Church supports school and extracurricular education, and pointed out the symbiotic relationship between the education of the younger generations and the consolidation of religious values, the shaping of civic attitudes and concern for the ethical dimension of the social community. The article adopts a research strategy based on the social conception of the history of education. Methods of historical and pedagogical research and of press discourse analysis were applied. The formal and editorial issues of the periodicals are briefly discussed, focussing primarily on educational and civic issues as they appeared in the Catholic social press after 1905 and on the problems of extracurricular education.

The aim presented in the article is an attempt to answer the following question: “If, and how the disintegration of family influences the psychosocial functioning of a child”. The research refers to a group of sixty children aged between 7 and 9. The basic group consisted of broken families and the comparison group consisted of complete families. For the analysis of the attitude of parents M. Ziemska Questionnaire for Parents was used. For the assessment of manifestation and level of psychosocial functioning of children the CBI E. Schaefer and M. Aaronson Questionnaire was used. It was stated-ehat there is a relation between some parental attitudes and psychosocial functioning of examined children. Family disintegration and lack of contact with the father have harmful influence on the child. Children from incomplete families are characterised by lower level of verbal expression and tactful behaviour. They are more nervous and ferocious.
