The paper deals with the nature of religious knowledge, in particular the legitimacy of cognitive statements in religion. The author suggests that neither science is as objective, nor religion as subjective as logical positivists use to argue. The starting point of his argument is Kuhn’s paradigmatic approach and Lakatos’s methodology of scientific research programs. These concepts indicate that scientific models are products of a creative analogical imagination; data are theory-laden; comprehensive theories are resistant to falsification; and strict criteria for paradigm choice can hardly (if at all) be found. Actually, all of these subjective features are more prominent in religion. Nevertheless, on his view, the difference between science and religion is a question of degree rather than absolute contrast.

The article deals with the role of paradigms in the system of religious beliefs. Kuhn’s paradigmatic approach, which indicates that that scientific models are products of the creative analogical imagination, will be used as a starting point of my argument. The data are theory-laden as comprehensive theories are resistant to falsification, and a strict criteria for paradigm choice is difficult to find (if at all). These subjective features are undoubtedly more prominent in the field of religion, where there is a greater diversity of models, a greater influence of the interpretations to data, a greater persistence in fidelity to paradigm, and a greater unclearness in the process of paradigm choice. Although each of these subjective features is more evident in religious beliefs, there is a difference in degree between science and religion rather than an absolute contrast.

This contribution is dealing with the question of mutual relations between science and faith in the prospective of the documents of the Vatican Council II. We can say that the 20th century signed a turn point in this field as the Christian-oriented scientists together with some theologians tried to overcome the dissatisfactory situation and started to compare, harmonize and interconnect the fields of their studies, it means the scientific and the religious ones. New approaches offered by the Council can be generally described as opened to the world, signed by an optimistic prospective and an endeavour for reconciliation. The affirmation of a justified autonomy of the temporal realities and of the fact that the science and the faith cannot be in a true conflict, brought the Council Fathers to express support to the utter progress of the interdisciplinary dialogue. Up to now, the recent experiences confirm that every attempt to create a global synthesis of the scientific and theological knowledge always proved to be only provisory and that the work on building the synthesis of the science and the religion would be probably never complete.
