This article presents the perspectives and barriers to academic entrepreneurship in Poland, taking into account the results of university spin-offs' research. Academic entrepreneurship plays an important role for the growth of competitiveness of small and medium enterprises, especially in high-tech industries. It is necessary to support scientists and entrepreneurs in establishing and developing innovative firms.
The article presents characteristics of selected university spin-off firms in the context of their creation of competitive advantage in the global market, mainly based on advanced new technologies. University spin-offs are the result of academic entrepreneurship and are often established by scientists and PhD students.
