Filozofia a mass media

100%
PL
Autorzy podkreślają różnice między poznaniem filozoficznym a kształtowaniem obrazu świata w oparciu o wiedzę pochodzącą ze współczesnych mass mediów. Wykorzystując m. in pojęcia homo videns i pustego ja, podkreślają negatywne cechy osobowości człowieka kształtowanego przez mass media. Akcentują rolę filozofii jako tradycyjnego antidotum na pojawiające się zagrożenia.

The authors emphasize the difference between philosophic knowledge and the formation of an image of the world on the basis of knowledge having its source in the contemporary mass media. Employing, among other things, the concepts of homo videns, and the empty ego, they underline the negative aspects of the personality of a person formed by the mass media. They emphasize the role of philosophy as a traditional antidote to the danger that appears.

The paper presents two volumes of Stanisław Leśniewski's Pisma zebrane [Collected Works] edited by Jacek Jadacki and published in 2015 by Towarzystwo Naukowe Warszawskie and Wydawnictwo Naukowe Semper. The focus here is on the works published in the second period of Leśniewski's scholarly activity, when he created his system of foundations of mathematics. However, in the publications it was not presented systematically and comprehensively. The article also explains why Leśniewski's view is called "intuitive formalism".

The author discusses Frege's critique of the so-called formal arithmetic. It is included in the second volume of Grundgesetze der Arithmetik. This study has been the main source of knowledge about the views of radical formalists (such as Heinrich Eduard Heine and Carl Johannes Thomae). For them, arithmetic is like playing chess: writing mathematical formulas according to arbitrarily adopted rules. Formulas, like chess pieces, do not carry any meaning, do not indicate anything. By contrast, Frege supports traditional mathematics: formulas have meanings and applications. He believes that formalists failed to reduce mathematics to a game of formulas - in fact, they based their views on meaningful science. Frege's conclusion was that formal mathematics should be supplemented with its metatheory.

I discuss Jacek Jadacki’s recent book, Stanisław Leśniewski: geniusz logiki (Stanisław Leśniewski: A Genius of Logic). The book presents the scholar and his work from the point of view of the people who knew him. They describe both his views and his personality. It is worth noting that not all the accounts are favorable. In the last chapter, Jadacki presents his own survey of Leśniewski’s achievements.
