The Dane Ingeborg von Stemann (1889-1973) took a genuine interest in Poland’s fate. She familiarised herself with the history of the Polish nation, was fascinated by Polish culture and learned the language. Poznań, an intellectual centre, developed a fruitful scientific and political cooperation with Denmark and Sweden in the 19th century. As a result of this cooperation, courses in Scandinavian languages were initiated after Poland regained independence in 1918 and the University of Poznań was founded in 1919. Ingeborg von Stemann, who rendered great services to independent Poland, was appointed the first instructor of Scandinavian languages at Poznań University in 1920.

Instytut Polsko-Skandynawski powstawał w ramach polskiego państwa na uchodźstwie, w okresie gdy Polska była częścią bloku sowieckiego. Założony w 1985 r. z sie dzibą w Kopenhadze IPS dysponuje starszymi o 15 lat archiwum i księgozbiorem. Dokumentacja zajmuje ok. 40 metrów bieżących. Składają się na nią materiały do rozpraw naukowych, korespondencja z członkami jednostki i instytucjami, źródła do dziejów emigracji polskiej i jej organizacji w krajach skandynawskich. Księgozbiór liczy ok. 2000 tomów. Znajdują się w nim prace naukowe członków instytutu, „Rocznik Polskiego Towarzystwa Naukowego na Obczyźnie”, „Acta Cassubiana”, publikacje własne placówki, literatura w językach skandynawskich dotycząca Polski, polska literatura poświęcona dziejom Gdańska i Pomorza, czasopisma ukazujące się poza Polską i inne. Instytut nie miał i nie ma specjalistycznej administracji tymi zbiorami, jak również finansowej możliwości zatrudnienia odpowiedniego personelu. Ze względu na te problemy, gdy stało się to możliwe po przemianach ustrojowych w kraju, dokumentacja oraz księgozbiór są sukcesywnie przekazywane do Archiwum Akt Nowych w Warszawie, Archiwum Emigracji UMK w Toruniu i specjalistycznych bibliotek w Polsce.

Harald Høffding i jego polscy korespondenci

The article concerns the correspondence contacts of Poles from Poland under partition and from newly regained independence in 1918 with the outstanding Danish philosopher Harald Høffding. They are basically about getting in touch with science and thought in the West as soon as possible. As a result, his most important works were translated in Poland in a relatively short time. In his research, Høffding dealt with e.g. the problem of the relationship between the individual and the multiplicity, and the struggle to create harmony between the conflicting tendencies. On the Polish side, philosophers such as Wincenty Lutosławski or Czesław Znamierowski, as well as others, including the writer Henryk Sienkiewicz and Cardinal Mieczysław Ledóchowski, were interested.
