The reflections included in the article concern the functioning of virtual communities and emerging online relationships between their members. The analyses were performed on the basis of the observation of a group of women – active members of one of the maternity forums. The women knew each other virtually and had been emailing each other (remaining in close, daily contact) for over a year. They had experienced (virtually and in reality) pregnancy, childbirth and infant care. Some of them had known each other since the period before their pregnancy. A social function appeared to be one of the most important functions of being a discussion forum member, along with the informative and advice functions. A special feature of the examined virtual community occurred to be the sense of locality and its specificity.

In the article the author shares her experience in research on counselling practices of virtual communities. The aim of the study was to understand the world of online communities, especially in relation to the advisory aspects. The author is interested in counselling, which in the age of the Internet has become public and personal experience. This text is not a presentation of research results. The author focused her attention on the research process, not on the final result. The specificity of the research was to agree with the perspective of the participant engaged in the virtual community and ethnographic description of the observed situation. Methodological inspiration for the author became the “emic” strategy by Kenneth Lee Pike. The “emic” studies emphasize the inner aspect of culture, the language, the participant’s perspective of culture. The adoption of such a research perspective has led the author to reflect on the difference between ethnography in the traditional sense and ethnography in the “emic” strategy. “Emic” strategy introduces some changes – the researcher is a member of the culture, his presence does not affect the others, he knows a lot more about the test culture, researcher is emotionally involved. The text ends with two diagrams showing the differences in the stages of research processes. The classical ethnographic research includes the following steps: 1) research plan, 2) entry into the research community, 3) observation, analysis, interpretation, description, 4) output from the research community. The author draws attention to the differences that are introduced by the “emic” strategy: 1) being a member of the community, 2) inspiration event, 3) the emergence of a research plan, 4) observation, analysis, interpretation, description, 5) will remain in the community.

In this article, the author draws attention to the phenomenon of mediatisation (meaning intensive process of compacting the network of connections between media and society). It is noted that the processes of mediatisation penetrate different areas of life (such as family, political, public life, etc.). The author points out the consequences of these processes in the construction of counselling. The various processes of mediatisation in mediated counselling (counselling in mass media) are identified in the article. The starting point is the concept of Winfried Schulz. The author of the article draws particular attention to the four (sub) processes of social change in which the media play a key role. These are: extension, substitution, amalgamation and accommodation. Each of these processes is identified by the author in mediated counselling. Each of them has an impact on the construction of counselling. The author focuses on such phenomena as: exit counselling beyond time and space, extended availability of tips, "suspended advice", replacing the direct interaction by mediated interaction and even by intermediate quasi-interaction, multiplication of different counselling deals in the next (new) means of mass communication, mixing different types of mediated counselling in a range of media, generating problems.

The article discusses informal counselling in friendly relationships. Two narratives borrowed from the media (television and the Internet) are used to illustrate the phenomenon. One of them, an animated film for children, depicts a way of organizing friendly assistance. The other one is an episode from an Internet discussion forum. They trigger reflection on counsellogy and questions about the quality and significance of non-professional counselling. Unintentionally, they also reflect/epitomise 'violent counselling’. In interpreting and describing this type of counselling, the method of text analysis in media discourse has been applied.

The article presented here is a result of a trio of opinions that arose during the period encompassing the Zakopane Conference on Adult Education (April 2011) and the Summer School for Young Researchers on Adult Education and Counselling (May 2011). Within the range of these scholarly events the authoresses tried to share their experiences on educating would-be consellors at the University of Zielona Góra. The resulting text is an attempt to describe over a dozen years of the authoresses’ experience in running didactic classes outside the university walls and driving traditional workshops out of lecture halls and into the space of a large city. Therefore, on the one hand, the authoresses make a brief presentation of their projects, while, on the other, subject them to academic reflection referring to the areas of professionalism and constructivism as understood nowadays. The article reveals changes in thinking about counsellors’ professional competencies, which may be observed both in practitioners’ statements and counselling reflection. The authoresses show educational possibilities provided by the use of performative etnography, and try to present the elaborate process in which counsellors can become reflective researchers of their own practice.
