The descriptions and assessments relate, specifically to events from December 2015 to October 2016, and to the latest literature, from 2014 to 2016. The contents cover, in order, recollections of important personalities in martial arts who have departed; scientific advancements and promotion in martial arts; awards and decorations; the admission of new members to the Idokan Poland Association (IPA); conferences and other important events. These are followed by information on new publications and brief reviews. It contains not only factual material, but also evaluation resulting from the selection of events and literature, as well as assessments of substance.

Opis i ocena dotyczą zwłaszcza wydarzeń z okresu od grudnia 2015 do października 2016, oraz najnowszej literatury przedmiotu z lat 2014-2016. Treść dotyczy kolejno – wspomnienia ważnych postaci sztuk walki, które odeszły; awansów naukowych i awansów w sztukach walki; przyznanych nagród i odznaczeń; przyjęcia nowych członków do Stowarzyszenia Idokan Polska (SIP); konferencji i innych ważnych wydarzeń. Następnie przedstawione są noty o nowych publikacjach z ich krótką recenzją. Jest to nie tylko faktografia, ale także wartościowanie, wynikające z doboru wydarzeń i literatury oraz ocen merytorycznych.

The journey to the cradle of martial arts: a case study of martial arts’ tourism

Background. The study presents the account of a trip to the Shaolin monastery within the anthropological framework of martial arts and concept of martial arts tourism. Problem. The aim of the paper is to show the uniqueness of the place of destination of many tourists including the authors. The study is meant as a contribution to the further study on the tourism of martial arts. Method. The main method used here is participant observation, and additionally, an analysis of the subject literature. This is partially a case study, and an analysis of facts, literature and symbolism. The method of visual sociology was also used (the main material are photos taken during the trip). Results. The authors conducted field research in the area of Dengfeng: Shaolin and Fawang temples cultivating kung-fu. The description is illustrated with photographs (factual material) and analysis of facts. It was found that in the case of the Shaolin centre both commercialisation of martial arts and tourism occurred. However, as wushu schools around the historic monastery are functioning, this is still an important place for martial arts, especially related to the Chinese tradition. Conclusions. Shaolin appears as a special place, especially on the map of “tourism of martial arts”. The whole world of martial arts has been benefiting from the Shaolin heritage up to now. The Chinese were able to commercialise this popularity, arranging in the adjacent area of the monastery a museum for tourists and wushu schools.

Ramy naukowe. W perspektywie antropologii sztuk walki i koncepcji turystyki sztuk walki podjęto temat podróży do klasztoru Shaolin. Problem. Chodzi o ukazanie wyjątkowości miejsca, będącego celem opisanego wyjazdu, oraz wyjazdów wielu innych turystów. Ma to być też przyczynek do opracowania szerszego na temat turystyki sztuk walki. Metoda. Główną zastosowaną tu metodą jest obserwacja uczestnicząca, a ponadto – analiza treści literatury przedmiotu. Jest to po części studium przypadku, po części zaś analiza faktów, treści literatury przedmiotu i form symbolicznych. Wykorzystano także metodę socjologii wizualnej – głównym materiałem badań są zdjęcia wykonane na miejscu. Wyniki. Autorzy przeprowadzili badania terenowe w rejonie Dengfeng – na terenie świątyń Shaolin oraz Fawang, kultywujących kung-fu. Opis został zilustrowany zdjęciami (faktografia)i analizą zagadnień. Stwierdzono, że w przypadku ośrodka Shaolin nastąpiła jednocześnie komercjalizacja sztuk walki i turystyki. Z racji jednak funkcjonowania szkół wushu wokół historycznego klasztoru, jest to nadal ważne miejsce dla sztuk walki, zwłaszcza tradycji chińskiej. Wnioski. Shaolin jawi się, jako miejsce szczególne, zwłaszcza na mapie ‘turystyki sztuk walki’. Z dziedzictwa Shaolin świat sztuk walki czerpie do dziś. Chińczycy potrafili tę sławę skomercjalizować, urządzając na przyległym terenie ośrodek muzealny dla turystów i szkoły wushu.

Report on the Fourth World Scientific Congress of Combat Sports and Martial Arts under the perspective of martial arts tourism

This report describes and reflects on the Fourth World Scientific Congress of Combat Sports and Martial Arts, which at the same time was the Seventh International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society Conference. This event took place on October 17- 19, 2018 at the facilities of the University of Rzeszow, and University of Law and Public Administration in Rzeszow, Poland. The event gathered about two hundred participants, representing academic centers, scientific societies and MA&CS-related institutions. Up to fifty studies on several scientific fields related to MA&CS were presented, showing the current diversity of this area of research. Workshops and demonstrations of MA&CS styles techniques were also part of the conference. All this diversity created a rich environment for cultural dialogue, scientific communication and transference of theoretical and practical knowledge. We suggest to further exploit the connections among the different scientific fields and MA&CS styles for future editions of the congress, as a way to improve the participants’ experiences.

Niniejszy raport opisuje i podejmuje refleksję nad Czwartym Światowym Kongresem Naukowym Sportów Walki i Sztuk Walki, który był jednocześnie Siódmą Międzynarodową Konferencją Naukową IMACSSS. Wydarzenie to miało miejsce w dniach 17-19 października 2018 roku na obiektach Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego oraz Wyższej Szkoły Prawa i Administracji Publicznej w Rzeszowie. Zgromadziło ono około dwustu uczestników reprezentujących ośrodki akademickie, towarzystwa naukowe oraz instytucji związanych ze sportami i sztukami walki. Przedstawiono rezultaty ponad pięćdziesięciu badań dotyczących kilku dziedzin naukowych związanych ze sportami i sztukami walk, pokazujących przy tym aktualną różnorodność tego obszaru badań. Podczas konferencji odbyły się warsztaty i demonstracje technik walki sportów i sztuk walki. Cała ta różnorodność stworzyła bogate środowisko dla dialogu kulturowego, komunikacji naukowej i przekazywania wiedzy teoretycznej i praktycznej. Autorzy tego krótkiego opracowania proponują dalsze wykorzystanie powiązań pomiędzy różnymi dziedzinami naukowymi i stylami sztuk i sportów walki w kolejnych edycjach kongresu, jako sposób na poprawę doświadczeń uczestników.
