The cemeteries in Aukstakiemiai and Rzevskoe are situated in the peripheries of the so-called Memel-kultur, which was identified by German researchers. This culture encompassed the area along the eastern coast of the Baltic - from the estuary of the Neman in the south to at least the central course of the Dane river in the north. Both cemeteries are situated in the area of the delta of the Neman. They are remarkable for the riches of their grave furnishings, which is especially notable in the case of the necropolis in Rzevskoe. 52 sepulchral vessels from both necropoles survived in the collection of the Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn - 31 from Aukstakiemiai and 21 from Rzevskoe. Before these finds found their way to Olsztyn, they had been kept in the Prussia-Museum in Konigsberg. Earlier than that (before 1906), the grave vessels from Aukstakiemiai were part of the collection of the Provincial Museum (Provinzialmuseum) in Konigsberg. Based on the published reports from excavations of these cemeteries it comes out that the grave vessels preserved in the Olsztyn museum fulfilled the function of additional vessels exclusively in earlier and more rarely in later cremation graves. One should therefore assume that the majority of preserved vessels come from the period between the end of the 8th and the beginning of the 10th c.
