In this article we will attempt to take a close look at the artistic output and literary phenomenon of Denis Osokin, one of the most unique writers of the new generation in contemporary Russian literature. Based on The Buntings, Osokin’s most important novel, we will attempt to discuss the subject matter, literary genre and selected problems in the author’s poetics and philosophy. What is most interesting today in Russian literature takes place here – in short forms, along the thin line between poetry and prose, and outside of existing forms, which is exemplified by The Buntings.

The article attempts to trace the process in which the selected narratives, based on the poetics of dreams, are constructed. This analysis focuses on the stories The Beast and Don Delta from Nikolai Baitov’s latest collection of stories The Beast Breathes, published in 2014. In the stories which were chosen as the examples, the presence of oneiric forms is both the primary compositional principle and the element determining the story’s genre affiliation. It is shown that the basic principle for organizing the literary dream in the story The Beast is the use of the poetic trope of metabole. Experiment with form underlies Don Delta, the story that follows. This leads the author to create a new genre form – the rough draft of a dream. Through his specific means of organising the dream form, Baitov reveals new possibilities for language in constructing a literary dream, while at the same time illustrating a paradoxical interaction between “signifier” and “signified” as well as their potential for creating literary reality.

The article discusses the functioning of collective memory and its manifestations in contemporary Russian cinematography. The author analyzes the play Martyr by the German playwright Marius von Mayenburg and compares it with the film The Student directed by a Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov. The author refers to the concept of collective memory in order to explain its significance in the process of constructing and preserving national identity. On the basis of this analysis it is shown that the youngest generation of Russians are experiencing an identity crisis, and that they are trying to redefine the models and patterns imposed on it in an effort to find its place in today’s world.
