The author returns to the question of what function did the lieutenant colonel of the General Staff, Ferdinand Čatloš, hold during the mobilisation in the fall of 1938, before becoming the military representative at the Slovak autonomous government. There are two different opinions. According to the first one, he was the Chief of Staff of the Border Area 37, defending the state border fortification, and according to the second one, he was the Chief of Staff of the 8th Division created during mobilisation as a new one. The author has been dealing with the question of Ferdinand Čatloš’ allocation since 1997. Originally he believed that he was the Chief of Staff of the Border Area 37. However later on he discovered documents, proving that Čatloš was in fact the Chief of Staff of the 8th Division. These documents include mainly the personal files of officers of the Border Area 37 and the 8th division.

The aim of the contribution is the analysis of the critical text of the Minister of National Defence of the war-era Slovak Republic and chief military commander, Ferdinand Čatloš. In the text, he provides an analysis of Milo Urban’s prose, Who Sows the Wind (Kto seje vietor) (1964), which describes the World War 2 period. The study includes an annex which containing a part of Čatloš’ paper which has not been scientifically reflected as yet. In her comparative analysis, the author of the study examined interpretation of two historical events by Čatloš and Urban: the Hungarian-Slovak armed conflict in 1939 and the so called Lichardus coup along with Čatloš’ resignation in 1941.Value of the study consists in the enrichment of Čatloš’ biography in terms of the memoir-like nature of his elaborate, clarification of the context of Urban’s artistic work and completion of his biography, since the “disputation” with Čatloš is a part of his correspondence and to evaluate the informative value for historical research on a sample of Čatloš’ commemorative texts.

In the contribution, the author deals with the question of functional assignment of General Staff Colonel Ferdinand Čatloš in the period of increased threat to the Republic and during the September mobilization in 1938. This issue was as yet unresolved or interpreted in a different way, practically since the first publication about his personality, in particular in the work of Václav Štefanský in 1998. Absence of the papers on the activity of the 2nd Army and their subordinate units – 8th Division Florian and the Border Area 37 as well as the mobilization-based (“double”) 8th Division Mánes, also lead the authors in the case of Ferdinand Čatloš to deal with partial data or (largely) with fragmental memories of F. Čatloš himself. Gradually, two different claims were published in principle. According to the first one, General Staff Colonel Čatloš was the Chief of Staff of the 8th Division Florian (HO-37) in the primary deployment and according to the second, he held the same function in the secondary Staff, 8th Division Mánes, composed for the mobilisation. Čatloš himself did not contribute to clarification of this contradiction, since in his memoirs, which are otherwise incredibly extensive, he only provides vague data on this subject.
