The article addresses the extinct highway, called Cikánka, which between the 16th and 19th centuries functioned as the shortened route between České Budějovice and Austria. The construction of the railroad precipitated its decline. Several extant segments of the old road have been discovered in the terrain.

This study focuses on electoral manipulation as exemplified by the municipal elections in České Budějovice. The spotlight is not just on the electoral campaign itself, but also on the reaction of the state authorities to attempts made by the ruling party to influence the number of voters in various ways in order to take control of the town in subsequent electoral periods.

The article is concerned with the staffing of the apparatus of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in three regions (České Budějovice, Ostrava and Prague) in the period between 1945 and 1951. The study describes the developmental determinants that had a significant influence over the organizational framework and personal structure. The study provides a basic overview of the staffing based on the three traits: year of birth, the period of joining the Party and the original vocation. In the first three years, regional party organizations struggled with a fundamental lack of financial resources and therefore could only afford to employ a limited number of political employees. Significant part of political personnel consisted of pre-war party members, who were also largely involved in the anti-Nazi resistance movement. After February 1948, all three monitored party apparatuses underwent a massive increase in the number of political employees. Positions in party apparatus were gradually occupied by younger employees, mostly post-war party members from the ranks of factory workers without political experience. After the inner party purge in 1951, these young political employees controlled regional party apparatuses not only by sheer numbers, but also by holding leading posts.

The study deals with the social and charitable activities of the first four bishops of the Diocese of České Budějovice, Jan Prokop Schaaffgotsche (1785–1813), Konstantin Ernst Růžička (1815–1845), Josef Ondřej Lindauer (1846–1850) and Jan Valerián Jirsík (1851–1883). Caring for those in need was a prominent feature of their priestly and later episcopal careers. The study demonstrates their commitment to the gradual integration of social and charity activities within the diocese administrative system. It mainly emphasizes their positive role in the implementation of certain social project – the largest of which were related to care for ill and disabled people in the bishop’s seat of České Budějovice. The study also discusses their life preferences and activities reflecting both the contemporary environment of the religious-political system of Josephinism and the spiritual formation that obviously implemented certain ideas of the Catholic Enlightenment, specifically the ideas of Antonio Ludovico Muratori.

The teaching potential of urban space in history teaching (case study of České Budějovice)
PL

Based on quantitative and qualitative studies, the author has demonstrated that the migration attitudes of the population of the areas around České Budějovice changed little in the course of the latter half of the eighteenth century. They were not influenced by the abolition of serfdom in 1781, either. Most of the reasons for which serfs requested manumission or consent to settle in another landlord’s demesne involved the issues of marriage and employment, as well as the effort to improve the standard of living for themselves and their families. Most movements occurred within a range of 20 km. The predominant group among the migrants was unmarried women, marriage being their primary goal. However, longer distances were covered by men in their movements undertaken in connection with e.g., military service or the practice of a craft. The statistical research was illustrated with a series of examples in a microhistorical approach, whereby the author has managed to offer a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon of migration strategies.
