The article summarizes the history of growing trees on the agricultural land in Czech lands from the beginnings of agriculture through their disappearance during agricultural industrialisation up to attempts to restore them in current multifunctional agriculture. In addition, it points at numerous traces of such land use and management in the Czech palynological record, European iconography, 19th century tax records (Franciscan cadastre), scholar agrarian literature, photographs taken by Czech ethnographers, and the landscape itself. In the discussion over the results, the discrepancy in documenting this old cultural practice is shown alongside the eff ects which a symbolic annihilation of a certain theme in agricultural knowledge can have on the features of agricultural landscape.

In November 1989 various theater groups participated in overthrowing the totalitarian regime by improvising discussion forums. After the so-called Velvet Revolution, it was the writer and playwright Václav Havel who became head of state while another playwright, Milan Uhde, became the Minister of Culture and Speaker of the Parliament. Nowadays the Czech theater scene is immensely diversified. We can divide the authors who began writing their dramas after 1989 into two generational groups. On the one hand, there are authors born in 1960–1970, who entered the post-totalitarian times already as mature adults and who at the moment have long experience in their artistic work as playwrights, actors or directors (it is quite common that those people write and direct their own work). On the other, there is a younger group which is made of people who were still children during the communist era, and their artistic activity was shaped and took place in most recent years. We are talking about a generation of artists who share a common experience of totalitarianism in childhood and adolescence, as well as the difficult transition between the two systems: communist and capitalist.

At the occassion of bicentennial of discovery of Antarctica in 1820, the paper addresses the legal framework applicable to this ice-covered continent. Territorial claims of several countries met the rejection of international community. Countries involved in Antarctic polar research gradually established Antarctic Treaty System for its management. Environment protection has become primary concern in contemporary Antarctica. Thanks to its systematic research activities conducted at the Mendel Polar Station, the Czech Republic achieved a privileged position in the system Czech involvement resulted into enactment of Czech Antarctic Law.

The article draws attention to the new possibilities of the research into the genre and thematic composition of Czech printed production of the 16th century, which are going to be offered by the Knihověda.cz portal in future. This portal virtually merges two databases of the national retrospective bibliography - Knihopis and Bibliografie cizojazyčných bohemikálních tisků 1501-1800 [The Bibliography of Foreign-Language Printed Bohemica 1501-1800]. It examines the genre composition of both Czech- and foreign-language printed production of the 16th century, which comprises a total of more than 4,000 units, and monitors the gradual development of the genres established in previous periods and the occurrence of entirely new genres. The aim of the paper is not a detailed analysis of the selected period but rather a basic overview of the genres and an indication of new research possibilities.

This paper focuses on the issue of making historical legal literature in the Czech Republic accessible. For historical and structural reasons, the accessibility of old legal literature in Czech libraries is inadequate. One possible solution to this long-term problem is the systematic digitisation of this old literature. The primary objective would not be preservation digitisation, otherwise the most common type in library digitisation projects, but rather both supplementary digitisation intended to supplement the book and periodicals fund with additional titles, and also ‘opening digitisation’, meaning digitisation to enable new ways of working with texts and information. The paper also concisely introduces the basic principles and technological, software and licence parameters of the National Legal Heritage project, which is an attempt at the practical application of these conclusions. This pilot project is primarily focused on the interwar period of the First Czechoslovak Republic, which was - in both Czech and Slovak history - an important period of great legal activity and preparations for major reforms.

The paper focuses on the frequency and collocation analyses of Česko (“Czechia”), the short, geographical name of our country, in the opinion journalism section of the eight-version SYN corpus, which comprises texts from the period of 1990−2018. Within the scope of the research, the period was divided into several sections, which are delineated by the breakthrough political and cultural events (the Czech Republic entering NATO, the Czech Republic entering the EU, climax of the first season of the Pop Idol-based contest Czechia Is Looking for a SuperStar, etc.). The frequency analysis is based on the relativization via i.p.m.; the collocability force is counted on the grounds of the logDice index, which is easy to be interpreted linguistically, and independent of the corpus size. The goal of the study is to capture basic motivations which led to the popularisation of the name and its expansion in the given discourse (e.g. the influences of other one-word names of states, sport commentaries, popular contests, and generation change). It is possible to sum up that the Česko name is employed in a variety of contexts, and its usage can be seen as unmarked.

The aim of the article is to gain a more comprehensive insight into the Czech collective memory of the Second World War. The article suggests that vivid collective representations of the Second World War are formed by family memory as well as by generational memory. On the example of four generations, the article shows the transformation of a national narrative of persecution and resistance of the oldest generation into an abstracted and generalized narrative of the youngest generation. Attention is paid to family recollections, their importance for the creation of the war memory by older generations, and their gradual disappearance from younger generations. The article documents the change of the perspective with which the youngest generation remembers the Second World War and stresses the emotional engagement of remembering. It argues that holocaust memory is well included into the Czech collective memory but in a new form shaped by the new culture of remembering.

Cílem studie je porozumět lépe české kolektivní paměti druhé světové války. Studie předpokládá, že živé kolektivní představy o druhé světové válce jsou formovány rodinnou pamětí, stejně jako pamětí generační. Na příkladu čtyř generací studie ukazuje proměnu národního narativu perzekuce a odporu nejstarší generace až k abstraktizované a generalizované podobě narativu druhé světové války v nejmladší generaci. Pozornost je věnována rodinným vzpomínkám, jejich důležitosti pro formování představy o válce u starších generací a postupnému vytrácení rodinných příběhů z pamětí generací mladších. Studie dokládá změnu perspektivy, s níž se nejmladší generace vztahuje ke druhé světové válce a podtrhuje důležitost emocionálního rámce vzpomínání příslušníků této generace. Čelné místo v představě o druhé světové válce nejmladších generací zaujímá holokaust, ovšem v podobě, jež je diktována novou kulturou vzpomínání.
