The paper discusses the competition between standard and non-standard varieties of Czech in teaching the language to foreigners, with a focus on two basic areas: first, there is the controversial question of colloquial speech as characterized by the increasing use of Common Czech, and second, there is the question whether and to what extent it is advisable to familiarize non-native students of Czech with nonstandard varieties of the language. The paper takes into account the fact that the internal diversity of Czech influences basic principles of how to present Czech to non-native speakers. The main goals are to discuss the appropriateness of using a non-standard language code when teaching Czech to foreigners, and to evaluate selected textbooks from this point of view. On this basis, the authors put forth methodological recommendations concerning the use of non-standard phenomena in language classes as well as their use in Czech textbooks for foreigners. Not only do these aspects have a considerable impact on practical teaching but they are also a central problem today in the spheres of Czech for foreigners and Czech as a foreign language.

Adverbial phrases are an intermediate category between grammar and vocabulary; they are phraseological. They are a collocation formed by a synsemantic word (a preposition) and a semantic word. Such collocation has usually a new meaning, which very often fully differs from the original meaning and its isolated components. Classes for intermediate and advanced foreign students of Czech shall focus on adverbial phrases in greater details.

The presentation of the Czech declension system in books for foreign learners is a key and very problematic chapter which later influences the presentation of other grammatical structures and categories. The complexity of Czech formal morphology is caused by language factors (different kinds of declension, many paradigms, a lot of exceptions, variants, etc.) as well as methodical factors (manifestation of agrammaticality, formalistic approach). The difficult situation has not even been solved by attempts to simplify and reduce the system of Czech declension for linguodidactic purposes. Most of the books tend to present the individual cases one by one (horizontal approach) rather than presenting the whole paradigms (vertical approach). Both of the concepts have their pros and cons. The question of optimal order of case presenting and some other problems remain unresolved. In the conclusion we provide basic linguodidactic recommendations for presenting the declension system
