The presented article addresses the problem of hole traces known as penitential holes or fire drill marks. The main goal is an attempt to verify the most popular hypotheses (about their origin caused by use of fire drill and the so-called ‘healing’ hypothesis) trying to explain the origin of these traces. Therefore, a number of activities are presented, related to both of the aforementioned reasons explaining the origin of the hole traces, applying the principles of experimental archaeology.

The paper concerns the reasons for the diminishing number of the so called pit traces. The origins and most probable sources of these pits were referred to in short. Views of scholars who noticed and described this problem were cited on the basis of specialized literature. Factors leading to pit traces’ disappearance were named. In the concluding remarks attention was paid to the need to protect such artifacts which may bear witness to some old practices which might still be unknown to us.

Prezentowany tekst porusza kwestię zmniejszania się liczby tzw. śladów dołkowych. Przytoczono w nim skrótowo genezę owych dołków, wskazując na najbardziej prawdopodobne źródła ich powstania. Opierając się na literaturze przedmiotu, przywołano opinie badaczy, którzy zauważyli i odnotowali poruszany w tytule artykułu problem. Na ich podstawie omówione zostały czynniki prowadzące do zanikania dołków. W konkluzji zwrócono uwagę na potrzebę ochrony rzeczonych artefaktów, mogących wskazywać na istnienie w przeszłości nieznanej nam praktyki.

Hereby text is a catalogue of places from the area of Poland where are located churches which have cup marks on their elevations. The aim of the text is to point the expense of this characteristic phenomenon, which is so ambiguous in its genesis. The catalogue allows to follow changes in the number of traces tracked by numerous researchers. It also points out clearly the disappearance of cup marks.

Celem niniejszego tekstu jest wskazanie rozległości występowania tak charakterystycznego zjawiska, które pozostaje niejednoznacznie rozpoznane w swej genezie. Przedstawiony katalog pozwala też prześledzić zmiany zachodzące w ilości śladów zinwentaryzowanych przez kolejnych badaczy, co wskazuje jednoznacznie na zanikanie przedmiotowych otworów.

Artykuł ma na celu zweryfikowanie, czy teza niektórych badaczy o nagromadzeniu okrągłych śladów wokół portali kościołów gotyckich, ma oparcie w stanie faktycznym. Autor dokonał inwentaryzacji ponad 160 obiektów sakralnych z terenu Polski Północnej, a następnie zestawił zebrane dane w tabelach. Podjął także próbę wyjaśnienia powodów, dla których portal był miejscem szczególnie pożądanym dla wykonywania czynności polegającej na tworzeniu śladów dołkowych. Odpowiednią interpretację oparto głównie na tekstach Biblii, która wielokrotnie podkreśla znaczenie miejsca prowadzącego ze świata profanum do sacrum. Całość rozważań wzbogacono szczegółowymi wykazami miejscowości, które autor odwiedził, w tabelach podano dokładne ilości śladów widocznych na elewacjach świątyń, uwzględniając ich usytu-owanie w odniesieniu do kierunków świata.

The aim of the article is to verify the existing thesis about round traces around ghotic church portals. The author has catalogued over 160 religious buildings from northern Poland and tabulated the gathered data. He has also made an attempt to explain the reasons for which a portal was an especially appropriate place for making pit traces. The interpretation has been based mainly on Biblical texts, which repeatedly emphasise the significance of the place leading from the profane to the sacred world. The speculations have been complemented with a detailed list of locations visited by the author and the tables specify the exact number of traces on the church walls with consideration of their geographical orientation.
