St. Bernard (1090-1153). The 900th Anniversary of Establishmentof Clairvaux

The 900th anniversary of the establishment of the Monastery in Clairvaux by St. Bernard passed on the 25th of June. In this context it is worth recalling this distinguished person who strongly imprinted in the history of the twelfth-century Europe. Moreover, 800 years ago there was one of the most important councils of the Middle Ages – the Fourth Lateran. He had to sort out relationships between the Church and the secular power, announce the next crusade and deal with the sect of the Cathars. What is more, it should be mentioned that it is the 600th anniversary of the birth of Jan Długosz. His Annales are an irreplaceable source of knowledge of the history of the Polish medieval. The recalled anniversaries lead us from Cîteaux, through Clairvaux to Kraków and Jędrzejów. They connect St. Bernard with Wincenty Kadłubek and Jan Długosz. The combination of these anniversaries with the Cistercian world is the subject of this article.

25 czerwca 2015 roku minęło 900 lat od założenia przez św. Bernarda klasztoru w Clairvaux. W tym też kontekście warto przypomnieć tę wybitną postać, która bardzo silnie odcisnęła się na dziejach XII-wiecznej Europy. Ponadto 800 lat temu obradował jeden z ważniejszych soborów średniowiecza – Laterański IV. Miał on uporządkować relacje między Kościołem i władzą świecką, ogłosić kolejną krucjatę oraz rozprawić się z sektą katarów. Wspomnieć należy nadto 600-lecie urodzin Jana Długosza. Jego Annales stanowią niezastąpione źródło do poznania dziejów Polski średniowiecznej. Połączenie tych rocznic ze światem cystersów stanowi przedmiot niniejszego artykułu.

Der Artikel mit dem Titel Bernhard von Clairvaux, Thomas von Aquin und die Heiligung der Heiligen Jungfrau Maria widmen sich der Kontroverse um die Unbefleckte Empfängnis der Heiligen Jungfrau Maria, die im Brief 174 des Zisterzienserabtes an die Canones von Lyon offenbart wurde. Die darin formulierten Argumente wurden von St. Thomas von Aquin und in der theologischen Debatte verwendet und damit die Haltung zur Heiligung Mariens zu Beginn ihres irdischen Lebens beeinflusst. Dieser Beitrag hebt den Einfluss Bernhards von Clairvaux auf die Position von Thomas von Aquin zur Heiligung der Jungfrau Maria hervor, der in der Literatur zu diesem Thema bisher scheinbar übersehen wurde.

The article entitled Bernard of Clairvaux, Thomas Aquinas and the sanctification of the Blessed Virgin Mary is devoted to the controversy surrounding the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was revealed in Letter 174 written to the Canons of Lyon by the Cistercian Abbot. The arguments formulated in it were adopted by St. Thomas Aquinas and used in the theological debate, thus influencing the shaping of the position regarding the sanctification of Mary at the beginning of her earthly life. This contribution highlights the influence of Bernard of Clairvaux on Aquinas’ position on the sanctification of the Virgin Mary, which until now has seemed to be overlooked in the literature.

Artykuł pt. Bernard z Clairvaux, Tomasz z Akwinu i uświęcenie Najświętszej Maryi Panny jest poświęcony kontrowersji wokół Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, którą ujawnił List 174 do kanoników lyońskich napisany przez Cysterskiego Opata. Sformułowane w nim argumenty zostały przyjęte przez św. Tomasza z Akwinu i wykorzystane w debacie teologicznej, wpływając w ten sposób na kształtowanie się stanowiska odnośnie do uświęcenia Maryi u początków Jej ziemskiego życia. Niniejszy przyczynek zwraca uwagę na wpływ Bernarda z Clairvaux na stanowisko Akwinaty w kwestii uświęcenia Dziewicy Maryi, która do tej pory zdawała się być niedostrzegana w literaturze przedmiotu.
