In the magical-religious folk worldview the basic division of time separatedthe temporal time from the eternal time. The first one consists of the cycle of human life where the livelihood of agricultural communities defined by the annual pace of seasonschanges in the nature. The most important dates for a traditional farmer organizationof his work on the farm were marked by holidays and special days devoted toa specific Saint. The eternal time is situated in a completely different dimension. It is theafterlife, “the second world” or “the other world” – a form of the space-time where thespiritual beings exist. From it souls and spirits penetrate into the human world. Theyfulfill specific tasks, voluntarily or recalled by the people who host them during specialmoments of the ritual year.

This article presents the aspects of religious syncretism in the novel “Dziurdziowie” by Eliza Orzeszkowa. The author identifies the connection between the relics of old Slavic beliefs and Christian religion in the 19th century Belarusian countryside. The analysis is based on various examples which describe ritual sphere and social customs of the rural people. The author draws conclusions and presents the essence of folk worldview in relation to folk devotion in a broad sense.

W niniejszym artykule autorka dokonuje analizy zjawiska synkretyzmu religijnego występującego w powieści Dziurdziowie Elizy Orzeszkowej. Przedmiotem jej rozważań są zatem relacje zachodzące między reliktami dawnych wierzeń słowiańskich a religią chrześcijańską na terenie XIX-wiecznej wsi białoruskiej. Owo zagadnienie autorka omawia, opierając się na wybranych przykładach zaczerpniętych z literatury podmiotu, stanowiących podstawę do scharakteryzowania sfery obyczajowo-obrzędowej ludności wiejskiej. Na podstawie zebranych materiałów autorka wysuwa kolejno wnioski na temat istoty ludowego światopoglądu, nierozerwalnie związanego z kwestią szeroko pojmowanej religijności ludowej.
