The subject of the text is an analyze of symbolism of the protagonists of Valery Shevchuk’s book House on the hill. Protagonists were personified with certain cosmic forces (the cosmic elements) and they are part of a large, time-space novel’s structure. The space in the novel is divided by the opposition running on the line up – down. The example of that novel shows, how the cultural categories are reflected in the literature and how they determine the structure of literary narrative. The symbolism of the elements connected to mythological and folkloric thinking, and describe reality in terms of sacrum.

Although Conrad-inspired motifs are not frequent in Zygmunt Haupt’s prose, they do play and important role. Thanks to discovering similarities and differences they serve the author of Pierścień z papieru to describe his own writing method. As a reader of Conrad he is interested in the poetics of concealment and revelation as well as the relationship between memory and denial. He discovers the poeticism and symbolism of this creation and its personal character, related to the experiences of childhood and dark memories of the fatherland. By recognizing the ways in which Haupt utilizes Conrad’s plots and ideas, it is possible to understand better his principle of shorthand, concentration of meanings, combining the usual with the exotic, the lyrical with the tragic, the personal with the universal, the serious with the pathetic.

Conradowskie inspiracje nie są w prozie Zygmunta Haupta częste, jednak odgrywają ważną rolę. Dzięki odkrywaniu podobieństw i różnic służą autorowi Pierścienia z papieru do określenia własnej metody pisarskiej. Jako czytelnik Conrada interesuje się poetyką ukrywania i ujawnienia oraz relacją między pamięcią i wyparciem. Odkrywa poetyckość i symbolizm tej twórczości, a także jej osobisty charakter, związany z doświadczeniami dzieciństwa i mrocznymi wspomnieniami kraju. Poznając sposób korzystania z Conradowskich fabuł i idei przez Haupta, wnikliwiej zrozumieć można jego zasadę skrótu, zagęszczenia znaczeń, łączenia swojskiego z egzotycznym, lirycznego z tragicznym, osobistego z uniwersalnym, poważnego z żałosnym.
